Can anyone recommend a decent, newish RTS game

I am looking for one which is quite modern (not futuristic) and realistic, I've got/played CoH and Men of War (WWII I know)

Anyone know any modern day ones?

I'd say grab Supreme Commander 2 off of Steam (hopefully it's on sale for ya, it's $7.49 for us in the states)...it's way futuristic, but a good one to enjoy with plenty of action. Beyond that, I would highly recommend World in Conflict and it's sequel Soviet Assault. Graphics still challenge PC's and holds up decently, albiet showing it's age. But the story is decent, the action is good, and it was one of the first to do a great job at the action-RTS side of things where you don't build bases. The MP is generally a blast. There is a demo that also allows for MP and a mission or 2 of the SP campaign, try that first and see if it's for you...it took me a little bit to adjust to..but once I did, I played the original WiC allt he way through twice and working on round 3 with higher difficulty.

world in conflict was a refreshing rts for me - i really love base builder rts games (command and conquer, dune, supreme commander 1, rise of nations, settlers, stronghold 2 are a few of my favourites) but loved the storyline of world in conflict and the expansion soviet assault (you can get it on steam). The game is set in the 1980s (maybe a tad earlier) and is pretty realistic with soviet russia and the US hitting it out.

Teh supreme commanders are good but hard imo. i always lose 1 on 1 unless i get a super giant robot or something :( i guess that i suck at that game. Command and conquer ra3 is kickass. Rise of legends is oolldd from early 2002 or something but still very enjoyable. And i guess WIC is good too.

Cheers, Got the SupCom series already, love it but looking for something different, WiC sounds perfect, going to look into it. it's a non-base RTS aye? I loved EndWar as well, bit similar i guess (no bases)

+1 for World in Conflict. it's kinda different too other RTS's in a cool way and the artillery's fun to use.
if you don't mind a game based in the 18th century (think pirates of the caribbean) Empire Total War is also good.

I don't mind 18th C I have historical RTS's (Real Warfare 1242, Cossacks I & II) I wouldn't mind a naval base RTS (thinking 18c/pirate era) Sounds nice but I doubt there is one (I do have Sid M's Pirates)

I got a copy of World in conflict through steam, ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT OMFG it is brilliant, the type of game I was looking for (very similar to Endwar as well)

Is there a skirmish mode on it though? I see a campain, and online multiplayer but is there a mode where I can just go head to head with a computer AI?

iirc there is a way, you go into mp, under lan or something and it'll give you an option to add bots to the match and adjust their difficulty. Glad you dig the game, it's definitely worth playing through at least once! :D

Well clarify...did you select a place to drop your units? If not, they won't drop. That's the first thing you do in MP after picking what class you want to roll out as. Could very well be the issue...but you could always try MP too, that is a hoot when you get in a decent server and on a side that works together.

But if you didn't add any bots, the game will sit there waiting for others on the LAN to join the game. So before launching you need to add bots in available positions, what side you want them on and how hard you want them to be. One thing I did read is that the game needs to be completely patched up, Steam should take care of this part though. But while in Massgate.net you may need to download extra maps released, though the Soviet Assault expansion should take care of most if not all of them. Keep us posted...play the SP for a bit, then get down and dirty with some MP. :D

What about Dawn of War II and the Chaos Rising expansion? The complete pack is currently on sale on Steam for today only.

Still remember my old playing days when Cossacks: Back to War was still the latest. He was Ukraine, I was Poland. Winged Hussars FTW!!!

Although it took quite some time, we've fought multiple times already in the map and almost used up all of the resources, mostly grass and hills left.

But my cavalry eventually overwhelmed his Serdiuks. Winged Hussars chasing Sich Cossacks was funny though LOL

+1 with World in Conflict too. Never got around to getting the expansion pack though.
