svchost.exe fun!

So I'm looking to trim back a few things for less memory usage. At idle my rig pretty much uses 2GB for no real reason besides all of the svchost.exe spams. (I did take note of Chrome, Skype, and NVIDIA processes and I know that it's only 2/16GB used, I just want the idle to be lower.)

Is there a way to trim back those annoying svchosts?

You could go into services (win + r > services.msc) and disable some. Service host (svhost) is the process in charge of running them. I have 12 instances running ATM with up to 10 sub-process each.

its not svchost then using the ram its probably superfetch and you should leave it on
also applications like Memeory cleaner are BAD and you should uninstall it you are breaking the super-fetch cache witch is most likely the source of your problems whatever terrible "memory booster" you are using does not know better then the windows kernel
unused ram is wasted ram windows will release it if something else needs it else it reserves a fair chunk for system performance and application cache

I'm a bit picky. I'm used to 8GB and running multiclienting, maxing all 8GB easily. I guess it's time to get used to 16GB.

well also the point they are trying to make is that with windows 7 on, memory has been handled really well. if you don't have enough, you don't have enough. it's not like the bad old days where windows was just a sieve and your memory said goodbye for no legitimate reason.

You have a server style architecture (fx 6300 with 6 cores) and 16gb of ddr3 ram... No need to worry about svchost. You have plenty of threads and ram.

I also have 16GB of RAM on my main rig and at idle RAM usage is 2.3GB. Out of curiosity I turned on my secondary right with 3.34GB of RAM (chipset limitation) and at idle RAM usage is 1.1GB. Windows will adapt to the amount of RAM you have present.

windows 7 by default keeps a ~2GB superfetch cache when system memory >= 8GB the Os its self only uses ~800MB

Yeah, don't worry about it. In Windows 7 Home Premium x64, with only 4GB system ram, I'm running Handbrake, 4 WCG projects, Steam is open, Chrome is open, Malwarebytes is running (active protection) and Windows Media Player is open... and I'm using 2.07GB right now with all this going on.

If the systems running on the one in your specs ( Raidmax 530w ) that's were a 10%+ lower power usage can be gained. A 80% efficiency PSU was much more acceptable 5 years ago lol.

And for ram usage 1-2GB is the norm these days and depending what you do with your computer depends on how much will be cached so you could see it cached another 10GB but thats ok even then as windows will release it if it's needed for some thing else anyways.

Windows caches files frequently used and will load programs preemptively based on use to speed up launch, it does this until a threshold of free memory is reached, at which time the cached processes and memory items are paged out to the swap file, which also should be left on and set at at least the size of your installed memory.

Many people have made uninformed guesses, thinking they know better than the software engineers at MS who, believe it or not, test the OS for performance under many different configurations, and also (shock here, brace yourself) want windows to run programs as fast and stable as possible. Let me reassure you, leaving swap or pagefile on is good, no more attempts at tweaking the memory management of windows is needed. In ye olden days when you may or may not have had cache on the CPU, on the motherboard, and the GUI was running along side DOS and low memory drivers and files it did matter.
