I just came across this, I thought it was very cool.
We don't tend to think in long time scales these days. This is very refreshing, in a way.
The Long Now foundation is building a giant mechanical clock, inside a mountain, that can go 10000 years without a human winding it, and still keep time.

Cool idea, but it seems like a useless waste to me.

Sounds like another Nevada tourist trap to me. What else are you going to do with all that desert?

It might be useful once we emerge from the Mad-Max deathscape that will follow the zombie apocalypse.

this the one that is mechanical and uses a binary code to run it.It was invented by a computer guy....Yep found it It is ....

Jeffrey Preston "Jeff" Bezos (born January 12, 1964) is the founder, president, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and chairman of the board of Amazon.com. Bezos, a Tau Beta Pi graduate of Princeton University, worked as a financial analyst for D. E. Shaw & Co. before founding Amazon in 1994.

I seen this on the show Life After People.:rockout:

PS Yes it does run it is all together at least it was on the show.

Do what the German Afrika Korps. did with part of the sahara and just booby trap the fuck out of it with mines within a 10mile radius in every direction.

At least when the human population is pushed to the brink of extinction by famine and aliens and everything turns into a futuristic nightmare like Escape From LA with punks running the streets. The remaining humans or aliens (whoever the dominant species is at the time) can turn it into a sick macabre gameshow where a human or a team of humans must traverse the minefield in a bid to get to the clock and wind it up!
