The 4870 "2D Low", GPU voltage/Memory clock rate Bios Thread

OK, so a question about the latest official BIOS that is available on Sapphire site (direct link)...

As much as I've understood from the posts above:
a) obviously works for all reference boards - no matter which P/N or board maker
b) it has this new "thermal" mode

But what I want to check is - it too has support for 1,083V right "out of the box", just like the old "-105" BIOS that was leaked few months ago? And can this be changed "on the fly" with ATT just like with -105 BIOS? If so, than there is no need to additionaly enable this in RBE, right? I just wanted to double check.. Because than I'll probably flash this BIOS on my reference Club3D board, just to get this new "thermal" state and perhaps see if there is anything else new in it..

Not one game have crashed for me since i flashed with the new bios! And the JET turbo fan when rebooting, is silence now The REALLY nice thing is that i can play games with 820/1100 (stock cooler) and no crash or so, fine and stable

same problem here , i tried to put 500/200@1.083 within bios but when i enter windows / the clocks are diff.. what am i doing wrong

Something is different with the new catalyst drivers, the lower you can select on the memory is 450 if you use anything lower in the bios it won't work, the other thing is that if you use 450 for the memory, it will stay at 450, even in 3d it will not switch the memory clock but it does switch the Gpu clock.

thanks for the update , for now ill just use 550/900@1.083 in bios and use att in windows for 500/200@1.083 desktop and make game profiles if needed

Actually if you use 550/200/1.083 it will give you the same exact power consumption so you do the math.

I have couple of questions. First, how can I overclock ONLY the second card in crossfire mode? (AMD GPU clock and ATT do not work in that way) How can I flash the bios in DOS mode if I do not have floppy disk and I run Vista 64? (need boot up disk??? but I have not floppy disk) Is the new bios from Sapphire working with the old reference card design (red pcb)?

Actually if the 1.276 is available in your bios, it means that you can use it and yes it will work.

When RBE shows it in the bios voltage table. But it only works if the voltage regulator can do it. Since it is hard wired you can't increase it above the normale values.

Actually if the 1.276 is available in your bios, it means that you can use it and yes it will work.

Wrong! Actually it is when 1.276v is available in your voltage regulator. Otherwise you can't use it and the limit stays 1.263v. I tried the orginal Diamond bios XOC with the 1.276v in the bios table and it didn't clock any higher. Actually it even did overclock a little lower.

Since the voltages are set by 5 bytes (1 byte for min voltage, 1 byte for voltage steps, 3 bytes for the voltage regualtor). The first 2 bytes are only for displaying the voltage. The last 3 does activates the gpu powerplay.

Those bytes where exactly the same like the orginal 100 bios which didn't have gpu powerplay. Same goes for the second Diamond XOC bios. So long the problem is hardware based, you can't solved it by modding software.

Yes I am using it on my reference 4870, but I am not 100% sure that the new thermal state will work.

I have a new visiontek 4870 and evertime i try to flash the bios it tells me,the file.bin/rom cannot be found..I am using a usb stick booting into dos and atiflash.I dont understand what i am doing wrong.I had 2 3870's and flashed those bios 50 times a piece.The usb boots into dos no problem and atiflash even works on it but the bios files act like they are not on the stick.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Update your version of Atiflash - belive the lates is ver. 3.60.

Thanks for the bios Fastmix.I finally got flashing to work and tried the one from Mv tech and my card artifacted bad even at stock clocks.Maybe the cards dont like more voltage.Thanks again.

Hi guys!

It was a really helpful thread and I want to share what I've got. Nearly everything has already been said but perhaps it's a helpful summary^^.

My card is a Sapphire Radeon 4870 btw.

I flashed my card with the stock2.bin as offered on the first thread page where it's being said that you can alter the core voltage.
Then I saw the thing with the ATT beta where you can change the voltage on the fly.

The part which drains really much power is the DDR5 memory. When I change it from 900MHz to 200Mhz I've got a drop of 15 Ampere (GPU-Z --> VDDC Current) and a power save of nearly 30 Watts.

The known problems with switching the memory frequency are those annoying screen flashes.
The ATT has a built in auto overclocking function and with it you can make the 3D/2D states software sided. The most helpful thing are the exeptions. Once you've defined every application where there's no need for graphic power it works really fine.

Now when I play a game or start a 3D application there's one short flash and the frequencies / voltage are up.
When I return to windows there's another flash and the clocks / voltage are at their minimum.

A final pic:

6.8A is a really good Value and it saves nearly 45W of power when you're idle.

My overall power consumption of my System is now at 96W.
As for the rest of my system --> sig.

0- 1,237
1- 1,250
2- 1,263
3- 1,276

Can i use the Sparow2 and change the clock of the GPU (550 to 500 like my bios) and the RAM to 450 Or more low if possible? (900 in my bios default like Sparow2)

Put the gpu core up to 550 and you will notice no change in power consumption...just a little tip.

You can use the first bios attached to my signature, it is based on the stock2 or 105 variant.
The reason why I am using 550 is because a higher core clock is better and the power consumption is exactly the same, so I see no point in using 500.
