I really don't know how you're defining 'best'.

For <$100 it has to be the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (with a BIOS update, it takes Wolfdale chips).

For <$150 you get ASUS P5N-D and the Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P for SLI and CrossFire respectively.

Beyond, it's the ASUS Maximus Extreme and The ASUS Striker II Formula for CrossFire and SLI respectively.

PS. I did not choose to mention Intel 'Skulltrail' 5400XS because I don't think there's a LGA771 Core 2 Duo.

This is a very general question, The choices would differ as to the purpose of the machine and your own specific requirements and budget if only we could put our personal tastes aside and not write people/hardware off if somebodys opinion differs to your own, especially when somebody asks for suggestions on a board purchase....and titles the thread "ultimate" of something.

That said if you get a board with an ati/nv chipset the graphics sub-system is usually optimized, buying an intel built board with an intel chipset and cpu which sub-system would you expect to see optimizations..

I think the skulltrail is more a pr thing than anything else...it will take a while for the tech to filter down,
it makes me smile though i remember my old dual p3 tyan....only reason i did it was cuz i coulnt build anything faster.

Budget Gamer: This board costs $104, four bucks over the $100 cap but believe me, you'd rather skip your next Big Mac and grab this board than settle for anything <$100:

It's the DFI Dark Infinity NF-650i Ultra T2

Company page
Newegg

That board doesn't support 45nm processors, but brings with it NV RAID. If you want to use a 45nm CPU, buy a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, flash it with the 45nm CPU supportive BIOS.

The rest I leave it for others to choose, I myself am a $125 motherboard guy.

Ok, this is first a reply to 'marsey99'. I have just classified the boards that way because the more expensive boards are pro designed for overclocking etc. Thanks for your suggestions to, the DFI board looks excellent.

I voted Maximus Formula, but I may be a bit biased. lol.

But seriously, this is the most happy I've been with a board to date. I really like mine a lot.
