It did surprise people, when Thermalright decided to release a full-copper version of its iconic Ultra 120 CPU cooler, with one of the highlights being that this cooler tips the scales at close to 1.9 kg (roughly 4.19 lbs), while the other being that it's a limited edition product, priced at a little over $100.

Expreview got a hold of one of these coolers, and put it to test. The test-bed consisted of an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 overclocked to 3.60 GHz running on an ASUS Maximus Extreme motherboard. With the machine idling, the cooler did not show any improvements over the cooling performance of the aluminum-built Ultra 120E. At load, the temperatures dropped by 4 °C, from 71 °C to 67 °C, a minor improvement. This leaves the looks of the cooler and its exclusiveness of being one in 3000 (being limited-edition) to justify its price tag.

4C is actually not too shabby. If i didn't already have an ultra 120 this seems almost worth the money.

Well you can get an Ultra 120E for about ~$50 so I can't say that double the price for that kind of gain is worth it.

In Canada its around $72 unfortunately, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of price the copper one is around here.

Yeah, I should have said ~$50 USD for the older 120E. The price for the all Cu version should be a sight to see in Canada. I hope its not too high.

^yeah, maybe a little more than 60c on a xigmatek, but for 100 bucks, this is lame.... and limited edition--lame....

i don't get thermalright... do they think there is no competition? or is their motto "there's a sucker born every minute"? does it even come with fan?

Not long now before you can remove your heatsink in your spare time and pump some iron... Or make that copper.

2 kg for that thing is laughable... Or plain sad, depending on how you look at it.

Yeah copper has dropped a decent bit. With all the robberies and such I can see why :D

And yes, this is a rip off, 4 C is nice, but not worth double the price.

I got almost a 10C drop just by lapping my TRUE, and that cost me about $10 in sand paper...

So if the Copper 120 goes for ~$100 USD and the Aluminium 120 goes for ~$50,.....

They are both rip off's if you consider the cost of the raw metal alone ;)

In a sense you are right. ;)

Still, $100+ for an air cooler is just too much. Soon or later this cooler will go in to mass production for half the price.

Remember that it has to be machined by things that cost alot of stuff and including the costs for the idiots that thought this would be a good idea.
