Hey What are the performance differences between the 9600GT and the 8800GT?

cheers

around 10% at stock. the 8800GT tends to blow it away when OC'd such as mine.

It depends on the price, i've seen as little as $20 difference, so i reccomend the 8800GT over it in most cases.

the eVGA Geforce 9600GT works fine, but now i need to change my power supply.

i tried the 8600GTS and the 9600GT with this power supply (Seasonic S12 430W) and it seem like when i'm in 3D games, it whines/squeals, i think this is due of the power it need, the 7600GT don't require a 6pins PCIe connector.

so i guess this whine/squeal i hear in 3D games (in Second Life i hear it more than in standard 3D games like Quake Wars, UT3, etc...) mean i need to change PSU, so i'll probably buy a Corsair TX650W

maybe the power draw is a bit too much for my power supply, or maybe some capacitors inside are aging faster than normally (maybe PSUs tend to whine when the power draw is near the limit they can do, or maybe it's the fact the 9600GT need at least 26A when i have 29A on this PSU)

capacitors tend to whine like that when they're at their limit. It could be a sign its on its way out
(as an exception, my 8800GTX has always had a whine at load and its never failed. sometimes things whine when working fine, other times its impending doom)

i don't think it would be the capacitors on my main board though, so i figured since i tried more powerful cards, my power supply must be near its limit with these 2 video cards (8600GTS and 9600GT) and maybe this one tend to whine at high power load, don't know...

but i think i'm going to buy that Corsair TX650W to replace this Seasonic S12 430W

you just have to find out where its coming from. It could be coming from the card itself.

if it happens on both then yeah its probably the PSU, the corsair 650 you mentioned sounds like a great investment.

yes, when i go on Second Life (where the whining is more present) the "sound character" is practically the same thing on the 2 more powerful cards.

with my 7600GT i get no whine since it doesn't require additional power.

So i've put the 9600GT in its box while i get the money to order this Corsair TX650W

hmm hey...for power supplies, is it better to buy it in a store nearby or from a website?

i would pay practically the same thing in a store nearby than on a website, have it right now, and i have 15 days exchange if the power supply go wrong within that.

on a website, it would be a big pain to exchange it within 30 days since it's heavy and it would cost me like 30-40$ to send it back...

(even there, Corsair offer 5 years warranty, but the biggest problem is the weight of the thing when you send it for RMA!)

i live in Canada by the way, so don't come up with the NewEgg solution, they don't send here, lol!

if you're paying the same amount, go for a store. most of us use online because the stores cost more. (EG, its $50 for a generic 450W PSU here, when the same units go for $25 online)

ok, initially i would pay 115$CAN+taxes for this power supply, but since they seem to add a "hidden 1 year warranty fee" i can deal this to 105$CAN+taxes without the warranty (15 days warranty instead of 1 year). (yes Canadian stores tend to be like 10-20$ more than US stores, sadly, even with the currency exchange right now...).

i'm low on money right now so i'll have to sell some stuff, probably next week i'll be able to get it.

but i do know most of Corsair PSUs are made by Seasonic, only the VX550W is made by a different manufacturer AFAIK.

well its a good PSU, and you can carry it over to an upgraded system if and when you get a new mobo/CPU. its a long term investment.
