makes no real difference unless you have conductive paste.

It can make quite the difference actually ive done my own testing on my 680 and the 780 when i put it on water. Using MX4.

@Solaris17 how did you apply the mx 4 on your card?

I either do a pea size amount in the middle or a line dead center of die running up and down depending on how classy I feel. I have noticed no thermal diffirence between the 2 methods

Sweet thanks Solaris.. I'll just do a line and see how it spread then pull apart.. Only 6 screw's and 60 seconds later its off.. I'm getting that arctic cleaner tomorrow and two tubes of the MX 4. This cleaner should remove any shit left from the factory Tim hey? Link ..http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX7341/Reviews

That be of to put on a cotton swab and give the thermal pads a lite rub down just because I had it apart so much and I'm sure when I touched it to line it up proper its contaminated?

You dont want to touch the pads with that. To be completely honest they are oil based it will destroy them. For that I plan on doing though cant afford right now the good fujipoly stuff iv measured the gap and you should be safe with between 1 and 2mm. http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g8/...ds_Tape-Ultra_Extreme_Thermal_Pads-Page1.html moving on the cleaner itself is great though you can get away with 90% isopropyl but I have owned both the cleaner and alcohol and either will be fine.

MX-4 is pretty good middle ground i find, Ive just recently re-pasted my CPU and GPUs with Prolimatech PK-3. Its a little pricier than MX-4 but its knocked anywhere between 3-5'c off temps.

Ok great on the pads thank you. I've been told by a number of ppl , computer guru's and body men painters. ISO at even 99% won't remove wax period. I bought a new car last June and I take care of it like a baby. Its aroura black in color and you know how dust loves dark cars. Well I wash and spray wax the car weekly in the summer and I came across I tiny stone chip on the front end. I ordered the touch up pen with paint on one end and clear coat on the other straight from the dealership. I called a autobody friend that teaches at a local college and asked him how to remove the wax.. He said what I needed to get but it was expensive so I pulled out the 99% ISO and rubbed the area clean. Well wouldn't you know the dam paint fish eyed so I knew straight away the ISO didn't remove the wax. It was awesome to remove the paint it dabbed on but that was it.... When I called memory express this morning to hold the items for me till tomorrow I asked about the cleaner. He told me what Dave mentioned and said some companies do put wax it there paste and more less continued my story without me even going on more about it.

He has 4 290's mining and said they ran hott so he did the same and had even worst temps then before.. He told me that citrus cleaner I have on hold is what he used and whatever the hell they used at the factory was unseen even after using ISO.

I pull a shit wagon behind me for a living (livestock trailer) and come spring when they stop tossing salt and shit like that on the winter roads we get the outside washed from all that winter tossed at us. We get the wash guys to citrus spray the trailer after washing and then 30seconds later they rince and I tell ya does that aluminum ever shine.. Just like new. So I have faith and like I said I'll post my result's good or bad on thursday. Wish me luck because its had to swallow 94c at stock running a way less intense program then when running furmark 15min stress at max settings and the gpu just drew a straight line of 70-71c for the whole run.

I've been experimenting with the Noctua NT-H1 I have and putting about one, maybe two grains of rice sized amount on the core, then screwing the fan back on in diagonals (like lugnuts) has worked the best. Smaller amounts of paste actually didn't work as well, nor did spreading a small amount evenly with a plastic bag on my finger.

When I used a small amount of paste (1/2 grain of rice), it ended up shifting somewhat when I bumped the cooler and it lost some of its ability to dissipate heat. I spread it evenly as well with that smaller amount. I repasted it with more paste as described (maybe |-----| this much)

Here was my results (with custom fan profile)
Load is BF4 in "Locker"
Stock: Idle 32*C Load 81*C boost clock 1150-1240.
Spread: Idle 28*C Load 76*C boost clock 1254
~1-2 grain of rice: Idle 26*C Load 72*C boost clock 1254

The ambient has been the same, 21*C.

edit: For clarification, these would be small grains of rice, maybe I should say its one "long" sized grain.

@Vario
What card you using? A green one I assume.
There's a big difference in Hawaii gpu then the green card your using. I thank you for the post and also looked at noctua paste but what turned me off is the shelf life of the paste and it does dry up and needs changing. This paste msi used on the 290 is different then the msi R7970's that I owned and I used as5 on both of them and had mabey 1-2 c lower temps. I'm pretty good at judging the amount to use by line or dab method.

I did use mx4 on my old AMD rig a few years ago and had good luck with it and any gpu too it worked well on. I don't know, last cooler was copper and this one is aluminium I believe and as5 and icd24 just didn't do a darn thing except give me a migraine. The paste on the 290 does look like a MX color but till I can swap it out I won't know for sure.

The as5 was starting to drop idle temps down to 39-38c at idle but its a long way from the 30_31 or so it was doing at higher ambient temps.
All paste needs a certain amount to have a nice spread. As5 was a little smaller then a BB and the icd24 about a size of a frozen pea to spread the entire die with no ozzing around the edge.

The as5 did leave a bit of area not covered but did work better but still didn't work. I think the MX paste is going to solve all my heat problems. I have had ppl tell me use the credit card spread lol... You know what I say to them?
Go ahead do it the wrong way lol... I'm just going to blob about 3mm in diameter in the center, eye ball the cooler on as its a pain in the ass having no dowel guide pins to help but I've had my practice the past week and have it down to an art. If the MX don't work then its off to msi for rma... Both cards.

Lesson well learned.. Don't fu#+ with a good thing especially when its running cooler then all other air coolers out there ATM. Leave well enough alone but like they say curiosity always killed the cat ;)

Forgive the rambling 900miles in 12.5 hrs got me brain .... Good night all. Will.check back after some well needed sleep.

That's all

Yep the 770. The 7850 was repasted using AS5 about a year ago and that really helped a lot. I used a thick spread with that one.

Yup that's what I find with the as5 on these AMD cards more is better but you can only use so much then its shooting out the card time ;)

Paid way to much to have that happen.

Tomorrow is a clean and MX4 on the CPU

Should be interesting as I'm already sitting at 29c @ 4.8 on the hottest core

Wow very nice. I have been considering getting some for the next time I remount. Usually seems like you will see gradual improvement for maybe a week or so as the paste matures so it will just get better and better.

I think he just finally got the cooler and chip cleaned nicely. MX4 is good.. but nothing jaw-dropping, really. It's better than MX2 by a large margin, for sure, though. I use MX2 for board testing, finish a HUGE tube every 4 months or so.

Credit goes to W1zz for the ArticClean, he's the one that told me to get it...amazing how much of a difference it can make in clean-up.

Yeah that's why I said I didn't know the base of the cooler had a copper tint to it until using ArcticClean, that citrus just worked wonders.
A few drops on #1 solution and it turned AS5 into a bet bag of crap lol, it just broke it down and I couldn't believe my eyes.
I'm never using anything but from now on. Even 99% Iso never even came close to cleaning this good.
