So I just saw that Rise of the Triads has a release date now, and I remember that quite fondly from back in the day.. It was truly a hidden gem I think.

So which 10 games from the past would you like to see redone in a modern engine and why?

Mine:

10: Hexen - At the time it came out it was one of the most visually impressive games made. I remember this as good fun and pretty hard.

9: Doom - Make it much closer to the original than Doom 3 was. Still with the satanic imagery and going to hell and all that.. It could look absolutely beautiful on a modern engine.

8: Forbidden Forest - Probably the first game I actually beat on my own as a kid.. I LOVED this.. Really scary, awesome with the bow.. Only took like 10 minutes to beat.. Redoing this like a souped up Crysis in dense jungle with monsters, skeletons and stuff.. Could be really fun.

7: Bioforge - The hardware killer of its day. Action roleplay at its finest. I seem to remember a pretty good combat system in this.

6: Fist 2 - I remember this as being really really hard, and I never made it through.. Basically a sort of action adventure game where you had to fight the bad guys as if it was a fighting game.

5: Freelancer 1 and 2: I played this with a highend pc of the day, good headset and a Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick. To this day it's still one of the most awesome gaming memories I have.. Flying down low to big ass capital ships feeling the AA rocking my fighter, looking at dozens of capital ships duke it out with big ass lasers and A LOT of fighters.

4: Dark Forces games - Star Wars FPS done right

3: Jedi Knight games - Star Wars fps done right with decent lightsaber battles.

2: Tie Fighter - Looking a Star Citizen and then thinking how Tie Fighter would look today makes me all giddy.. Come on Disney!!

1: X-Wing - See above add Death Star trench run. Disregard X-Wing Alliance, just give me a snubfighter and point me at the closest Star Destroyer. Lock S-Foils in attack position!

(I'm kind of a Star Wars geek, that might have influenced me a bit)

SimAnt would be cool, although it might be a little creepy with lifelike bugs. Especially the spiders.

Blast Corps for N64, because who doesn't like smashing stuff?

I'd LOVE a Sanitarium reboot.

A Gabriel Knight reboot would be very cool.

What about The Lurking Horror? It manages to be scary with just text, imagine it with lifelike visuals. It'd either be a complete disaster or horror gold.

And a new turn based Fallout, as long as Bethesda keeps making 1st person Fallouts too.

In the order I thought of it:

1. SimCity 2000: Network Edition -- Multiplayer SimCity done right (not the pathetic excuse for one called SimCity).

2. Freelancer -- Lucky that Star Citizen sounds similar.

3. Alpha Protocol -- I don't want it redone, I want a sequel. Sega said the IP is dead.

4. The X-series of games. It needs a multithreaded engine that can handle the huge space battles without major framerate loss. We'll see what happens with X: Rebirth.

5. Command & Conquer: Renegade -- I love the RTS/FPS hybrid. I wish more games would use that formula.

6. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed (console version) -- It did everything right.

7. SimCopter -- OMG YES!

8. Streets of SimCity -- OMG YES!

9. Evil Genius -- That title could become so much more.

10. StarTopia -- Game came out over a decade ago is among the best ever. Like Evil Genius, it could become so much more.

Appended

11. MechWarrior 4 + expansions -- No game has approached its level of awesomeness to date.

12. Black & White -- I want more mini-God pets, dammit!

13. Populous: The Beginning -- I will not dignify that question with a response, good sir!

Catacomb was the godfather of FPS. Before that all we had was Mad Maze and Phantasy Star.

Arcade version was FAR better......showing my age. Also the list in the OP is invalid. No Quake.

I just really didn't like Quake.. I bought a Voodoo card to play the damn thing even.. Multiplayer was ok though, but Quake multiplayer topped with Quake 3 imo.. Still wasn't as good as the org. Unreal Tournament though.

Doom had a MUCH better atmosphere and gameplay. I think Quake struggled a bit with level design. Like they HAD to try to use the verticality, and BROWN :D..

Only 1 decent enemy in the org. Quake too.. That leaping thing that ripped at you.

I'm puzzled.. What made that so good? It was pretty decent as I remember, but nothing special that really made me think that it was a good NFS game.. In my view the NFS games peaked at Need For Speed 2 (awesome multiplayer) or the org. Hot Persuit.

I did play Porsche unleashed on pc though.. Maybe I missed something? Good multiplayer perhaps?

My list is chronological - PC games that I played on my 486 when I was 15 ... at least what I remember :

1. Warlords - I honestly don't know if I want this redone of pure nostalgia or it was good. That was my first PC game (i played only commodore 64 and zx spectrum games until then)
2. Day of the tentacle - this gem should have high res. version with same art style
3. Doom - I remember it being much more colorful than doom 3
4. Dark Forces - better doom than doom and star wars on top of that. Look Ma', I can jump in this game
5. Warcraft 2 - If this was redone with tesselated geometry while keeping same art style it would look great - the best in the series for me
6. Duke Nukem 3D - This was my reaction back in the days: using mouse in FPS? Preposterous! Let me try it ... oh ... this ... feels ... so ... right. I secretly want this redone exactly the same only using gearbox's models and fine-detailed game-world. Don't touch the gameplay just bathe my face with eyecandy

After that ...

8. Clive Barker's Undying - redone in unreal 4 engine of course as original was done in original unreal engine
7. Grim Fandango - high res version with same art style but better models and pre-rendered backdrops with global illumination ... drool
9. System Shock - i see lots of light probes and ambient occlusion in potential remake of this one
10. Diablo 2 - whoever said it should be redone exactly the same only in high res - I couldn't agree more

Ah, good times.

1: Starcraft 1 + Broodwar, fabulous classics and with the same look but updated textures would look amazing.

2: KotOR 1+2, go without speaking that these were some of the greatest storyline rpg's ever. if todays graphics were applied, i don't know if i'd stop playing.

3: Praetorians, i always thought this game was epic, yet so few appreciated it and it never got a sequel. The game play strategy was kind of limited but it was solid gameplay.

4: Galactic Civilizations 2, practically got in bed with this game, played for hundreds of hours.

5: AoE 2, i know they came out with 3, but i think 2 is way better, just needs a face lift.

6: warcraft 3+frozen throne, game was the most unique RTS i'd played besides SC.

those are really the only games i can think of right now that haven't had a good enough sequel.

Just saw this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...urns-with-spiritual-successor-satellite-reign

Now I feel like putting the Syndicate games on my list.. That FPS from a while back wasn't Syndicate at all..

And Biggishady Barkers Undying was aaaaweeeesoooome..

I was thinking about all the old SCUMM games like Day of the tentacle etc.. I would really rather just see the interface redone for tablets and the graphics spiked up.. I'd be happy camper on my tablet player Kings, Heros and Space Quest and ofcourse Maniac Mansion, Day, Full Throttle and so on.. And Simon the SOrceror :D..

So true, Monkey Island got its HD remake, it's time for the others. I wouldn't mind playing it on tablet - unlike fps and tps, scumm vm adventures are natural for tablets. What are they waiting for?

I'm puzzled.. What made that so good? It was pretty decent as I remember, but nothing special that really made me think that it was a good NFS game.. In my view the NFS games peaked at Need For Speed 2 (awesome multiplayer) or the org. Hot Persuit.

I did play Porsche unleashed on pc though.. Maybe I missed something? Good multiplayer perhaps?
Open world multiplayer with up to four players, good selection of cars, weather effects (ice was a bitch as it should be), good music, and good campaign (had closed circuit races with Vintage Porsches as well is circuits made from the open world maps). It was basically Need for Speed: Most Wanted (not the abomination) before Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

Excellent list, I didn't know other people played SimCopter and Streets of SimCity :)
I have virtually every "Sim" title. Streets of SimCity is pretty much unplayable on modern hardware.

Here are what IMHO are some of the best classic PC games or series:

1. Deus EX
2. X-Wing and Tie Fighter series
3. Wing Commander series
4. Sim City 2000
5. TES: Morrowind
6. Doom 1 and 2
7. Half Life
8. Freespace 1 and 2
9. Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
10. Homeworld

I would buy an HD remake of any of these games in a heartbeat, I still own most of them but I prefer not to play them anymore as the years have not been kind to them, and I prefer to keep my rose tinted memories intact :p

The recent number of HD remakes seen in the past few years means there is a big market opportunity for studios to develop enhanced versions of classic games, so it's your move developers, start working on those titles and get my money already!!! :rockout:

1) Guardian Legend. It was an awesome game that merged top-scrolling shooter elements with adventure and rpg elements. Still haven't found another game that combines these elements together so well, and it was on NES!

2) DOOM I & II. Fuck DOOM 3, and no, I won't be nice about it. DOOM 3 was a decent FPS but it was NOT a DOOM game. I'm still pissed John Romero A: let that POS out of the studio and B: basically told DOOM fans to screw themselves.

3) Gundam Battle Assault I & II. The last good Gundam games IMO. Not only were they damned good(and innovative) fighting games, but having mechs available from nearly every series all the way back to Mobile Suit Gundam was just awesome. Ever wondered who would win in a battle between RX-78 and GP02A? Grab a friend and find out!

4) Syphon Filter: Omega Strain. As far as I'm concerned, some of the best online co-op PS2 ever brought about. The sheer size of the armory, the multitude of secrets, and multiple ways to complete levels required tight communication between you and your three comrades to finish each level in a timely manner while avoiding innocent casualties and completing all objectives.

5) Chrono Cross/Chrono Trigger. Do I even need a reason for this one? It should be obvious, lol.

6) Operation: Body Count. A little-known DOS FPS based on a heavily-modified Wolfenstein/DOOM engine. The premise was simple: terrorists have taken over a skyscraper and you have to work your way up 100 floors from the basement to take down the kingpin. In classic DOOM style, there were plenty of secrets, hidden rooms, and easter eggs to be discovered, as well as a destructive, realistic(for the time) armory with things like Galils, Uzis, flamethrowers, and RPGs. The physics were also very good for the time, with things like air drafts affecting the spray of your flamethrower or seeing broken out windows and having to avoid walking over the glass so as not to alert the enemies of your position. Too bad almost nobody has ever heard of it

7) Robotron 2084. I'm dating myself here, but with all the quarters I'd dumped into these arcade machines, I think somebody should send me one, lol. For those unfamiliar with Robotron, take a look at any modern gaming controller. Notice how it has TWO analogue sticks? Thank Robotron for that ;)

8) Area 51. Who hasn't spent every cent in their pocket beating the game on Kronn Hunter mode? Still the best arcade shooter I've ever played, by a long ways, too. And yes, I am implying it's better than Time Crisis.

9) Tempest. Again, another arcade game I wasted weeks worth of allowance on. With the recent success of arcade throwback titles like Geometry Wars, I can see a Tempest remake or sequel being extremely successful.

10) Clam Digger. An old Commodore 64 game(again, dating myself, lol) I don't expect any of you to know this game, so a brief description is in order: Tyrone calls you up, you know - in the game - and he says "I can dig more clams than you, stupid!" And you gotta say "Nuh-uh, boy," And y'all gotta race down to the beach with your buckets and your shovels, and the object of the game is to find parking. That's just the first level, but not many people even made it to the first level, much less any of the following levels. It's a hard game!

These are in no particular order, just the order I thought of them.

EDIT:
panzer dragoon - was amazing rails shooter and story. saturn
Already has a sequel on Xbox that included a high-res remake of the original. Look up Panzer Dragoon Orta.

1: System Shock 2. Bioshock just doesn't do this game justice. I want weapons that break. Limited ammo, and shodan.

2: Freespace 2. Nothing ever came close to this title in terms of making you feel like a maggot on a hook. You think your actually going to win and then boom a fleet of the biggest ship you have ever seen warps in.... Your doomed, dead or running away.

3: Xwing v/s tie

4: Dungeon keeper

5: monkey island.

6: Sacrifice

7: alpha centari

8: driller (spectrum 128K game).

9: Splatter house (Mega drive/Genesis)

10: Shinobi (Mega drive/ Genesis).
