There seems to be a worldwide crackdown on piracy, as of late. Demonoid was once shut down by the Canadian Recording Industry Association, and then came back on the promise that Canadians could not access Demonoid. Unfortunately for anyone hoping for a fast and easy way to download that latest Linux distribution, the CRIA had a nasty surprise for the administrators of Demonoid. You can see the nasty surprise on the front page of the website.
This method of site shutdown, called "upstream takedown", was done in accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act

Why is it that big companies can blackmail all they want, but if we do it it's against the law?

This sounds as stupid as someone speeding in school zone -> lets go to the source and shut down the neighborhood gas station, so no-one can't speed anymore at that site. Was it that gas stations fault that someone whom they provided speed used it illegally?

Parents have to take their kids to school with hydrogen busses and gas station owners kids have to starve as some stupid CRIA members blackmailed them :(

this is a very sad day amongst pirates....

Demonoid was huge but I think they knew what was coming as when ever I tried to sign up to an account to get to their torrents it wouldnt let me claiming they had already reached their Max level of uses & you couldnt join unless you had a special Invitation/serial key from them....

    Rust in peace Demonoid

All I will say is that you guys spouting off that the pirates cannot be stopped are really gonna be eating your words in the next few years to come. Your idiotic logic that software/music/movies/whatever is costing too much and you deserve it for free is gonna finally be squashed. Please, noone needs to respond to me with a personal attack since I am not attacking anyone personally. But I do firmly agree with the fact that pirating is what makes things cost more and I have no sympathy for these sham sites getting closed. The sooner they all get closed down the sooner our prices will drop.

    all i can say is

You cant stop piracy, dont bother trying.
Once the internet was created it all blew up (piracy... the good kind of blew up! )
& thats a large thing keeping the net going at the rate it is.
Give up, we will all find bigger & better ways 2 stay under the radar!

so :toast: to all the pirates keeping the system running.

another revelation is coming & we'll just keep making them better.:respect:

EDIT: (b1lk1 this isn't a comeback 2 ur last post. i didn't see it when i wrote this & i pretty much agree with the prices thing!!!)
    (p.s. im not exactly sober!)

This sucks, I used to get episodes of TV progs that I had missed due to other commitments. I guess the bastards'll come after ME now cos I didn't programme a video recorder to record these videos but used the internet and Torrent software!Oh, and piracy will act to keep software/ audio/ video prices down as far as I'm concerned; if Joe/ Joanne Public can get it free then making it more attractive by NOT ripping them off horrendously acts to encourage sales-just look at sales of the most recent Radiohead album (In rainbows). They did very well from the album with some people only paying a pittance but they cut out the middleman, in this case record companies, so they kept their earnings :D

Respect to the unauthorised lenders/ friends I've not met in person as of yet!

What's so bad about it? If you dont like it, then dont use it. Plain and simple. Just because you dont like something doesnt mean others feel the same. So saying you wish someone would shut down myspace is a selfish act.

hopefully the sites that aren't down by the law yet will study and learn some lessons, not to let an open spot where could be shutting them down like the others.

Pirating has been out since my older brother own an Amiga 500.
From what I remember games were just as expensive then as they are now.
    It's not going to stop.

you really are deluded if you think this will ever have the effect of lowering prices.

they cant RAISE prices as long as piracy is there because honest people will only pay so much before they turn to "alternate" means of getting media. eliminate piracy and overnight you can double the price or more on media.

if you never had one pirated copy made the prices would be way way higher than you pay now. if you could flip a switch and as of this second nothing could be pirated any more, the companies would be fighting over each other to see who could be the fastest to raise prices the most.

as long as pirates are there they keep the media companies prices lower because if you can get a pirate copy they have no choice but to supply us with a reasonably priced legal copy or you wont buy it.

There will always be some decent pirate sites, such as thepiratebay. Their servers are in Sweden, where no copywrite laws exist. Also, little known fact, in cyprus its perfectly legal to buy and sell copied software.. hmm... I wonder where the next wave of pirate sites will be based ;)
