Toshiba's Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today introduced the Canvio Wireless Adapter, a simple yet powerful innovation that adds wireless networking capabilities to any traditional external hard drive, allowing users to share, stream and access their content from any place, on any device.

"In today's increasingly wireless world, it's becoming more important that our storage solutions have networking capabilities," said Maciek Brzeski, vice president of product marketing and development, Branded Storage Products, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. "This device brings yesterday's external hard drives into the 21st century with features that consumers demand such as easy access to their content wherever they are."

The Canvio Wireless Adapter makes it simple to instantly add high-capacity storage to a smartphone or tablet by wirelessly uploading pictures, videos and documents to an external hard drive instead of taking up precious space on the mobile device. The Canvio Wireless Adapter also makes it easy to share content to up to eight other devices at once - family and friends can easily access and download photos and videos and teams can easily access presentations and documents in business meetings. Users can also play and enjoy their entire digital media library stored on an external hard drive by streaming them to a tablet or smartphone. The Canvio Wireless Adapter can be used in a number of settings from a hotel or dorm room and even on the road, depending on the user's mobile lifestyle.

The Canvio Wireless Adapter is compact and easy to use. By simply connecting the adapter to an external hard drive and a USB power source, tablet or smartphone users can now wirelessly access the drive to store, share and stream their content. Both Android and iOS apps are available.

Plus, the device includes an Internet pass-through mode, allowing users to simultaneously maintain their connection to the web and the Canvio Wireless Adapter when connected.

    Pricing and Availability
The Canvio Wireless Adapter is available for purchase at select retailers and on toshiba.com/us/ for $79.99 MSRP.

Wouldn't mind giving this a spin (pun intended). Wonder how good the apps are, and if you can upload files through the internet "pass-through".

    Straight link.

Thanks, fiancee wanted something like this for the new 1Tb I got her, so she could connect to her tablet. This will absolutely fit the bill.

Nice bullet from the site that answers my question:

"Smart Storage Taking pictures, shooting video and viewing files can fill up the storage on your smartphone and tablet very quickly. But carry the new Canvio® Wireless Adapter with your external hard drive and you can easily offload those files to free-up space. You won’t need to attach a single cable to your mobile devices."

you can do this on android anyway, my regular boring old NAS does this with my phone.

ES file explorer -> homepage shortcut to NAS 'photos' folder, cut and paste my DCIM folders contents across once a week.

Yea, I have an ASUS N66R with USB ports that can serve the same function with "AiCloud". I'm just too lazy to set it up :p

One thing... this "internet pass thru" mode.... might have issues with hotel/cafe captive portalled networks (splash screens) . Possibly having the same issues as range extenders.

Update!!! I confirmed with a rep on live chat and they told me it would work. Hope the rep is correct!
