Im just curious how did TPU start?

Im lead to believe Wiz was the bloke who set our lovely community up but was there other people involved?

Was it always this popular and this active with so many reviews and news stories on a weekly basis because when I joined back in 08 I think it was very much in its prime, which it still is.

Was it just a hobby because the founders got bored one day?

I visit TPU more then once day but have no idea how it came about and any hurdles or hardships that crept up when it was in its infancy.

Did Wiz and anyone else involved in setting this up know what they do today or was it a steep learning curve from knowing not allot about hosting and more over managing a forum?

I guess allot of us take TPU for granted, me also, without knowing what it took to get TPU to what it is today.

I think a lot of us who came here in TPUs mid-life (2008) might like to hear something like this. This may have also already been explored in detail.

Roughly first half of 2004, probably April or May, there is a way through the advanced search function to find out some very old and interesteing posts :) First Pic shows search function with what you need to set to do the job (and get oldest posts to appear first), second pic may well be as a result of that search, the first forum pos W1z ever made !! :peace:

I started coming here way before I joined the forums, mainly searching for tools for my ati 9800 pro, and some news. :toast: So, I'd guess late 2004 early 2005.

And this one time... in band camp,

Remember when the servers went down sometime in 2005 or 2006 and all posts for like 2-3 weeks were lost?

The first time I surfed TPU was in the summer/fall of 2005 when I was over in Iraq for my first deployment. I was looking for ATI 9000m 128MB drivers and some other drivers but never found them. I would pop up periodically to diagnose issues and drivers from then on until after I got out of the military and wanted to join the community for all the help it had given me!

I joined to try and get more info on how to unlock ROP's on an old 6800 vanilla card. I kind of didn't realise the time then before I knew it I had been here several years

I remember mods such as polaris, zek, wazzledoodle, and thermo. Don't know if they were the original guys or not.

Joined late last year to see some news and get some info for a possible build...

As digibucc said, there's something different in the water around here. Can't stand brazilian forums, lots of ignorant people and not much knowledge.

Hopefully i'll be a active user around here for some years to come. :D

When did TPU start? Easy: 14 May 2004.

How do I know? Check out W1zzard's join date. As he founded it, his account was created at the same time the forum software was installed.

Legend has it that TPU was actually a placeholder name for W1zzards HookerzNbloW website, which he wanted to launch after looking into German law regarding exactly what content HookerzNbloW could host.

GPU-Z was originally designed to be a cocaine blood level timer to give much more accurate results for people who needed to do regular drug testing for work, but he found out that the acronym for Cocaine Per Unit - Zamboozle was already taken by a computer monitoring software.

While on a 3 month bender designing HookerzNbloW he accidentally uploaded the placeholder TechPowerUp! website and became depressed about the situation because it would cost him a bit of cash to replace all of the code and software uploaded to the servers.

So he just rolled with it, redid the cocaine calculator into a GPU monitoring product and started doing GPU reviews, as well as turning the original nostril and straw logo upside down so it resembled a power icon.

    ste2425 and Wyverex say thanks.
