as soon as you start controlling them, they just rebel harder.

Exactly.

And to their defense, when I was 14 I went on porn sites and deleted the browser history. Equivalent of your generation would be to have dirty magazines hidden under the bed. You can probably make a compromise and say 1 hour at the computer each day and if you delete browser history you won't have it the next day. That will get you a lot further than bringing in the iron fist. She's not 6 years old anymore to put it bluntly.

There comes a point when you really need to just lock them out of the computer. Hell, lock them out of the house on a nice day. Something my parents should have done to me because I've lived in front of my computer. I'm convinced that I've used a computer more than I've slept in my life. It had averse side effects too. I neglected to study and do homework, when I did go out I was mischievous. You're not doing your child any favors by indulging him or her when they take something to an extreme (a lot of computer, a lot of cell phone, a lot of TV, etc.)

If they get pissy, just remind them that the computer isn't going anywhere and that they can go back to it after they have spend a reasonable amount of time away from it. Just remember, you're a parent. You have the power to enable "My way or the highway," mode. :)

as soon as you start controlling them, they just rebel harder.

you can always just take away their internet access if you think its a serious problem.

I wouldn't recommend doing this on the computer they're using. Do it on your gateway or some point before you connect to the internet. That way (at least at first,) your child doesn't know how to disable it. Time restrictions for internet are also a good idea. My Cisco/Linksys E4200 has a lot of features that enable you to do this. You may be able to rely on your router to do this.
