just set multi to 40 and everything else on auto. once you reach the desktop, check temps first then do some load test to see what your highest temps will be.

I think you did the right thing if you never planned or never do plan on overclocking the chip. :toast:

I thought Ivy Bridge's highest rated TDP was only 77w? Why does that box say 95w? Misinformation or just lazy?
Congrats on the switcharoo, I had the temptation to upgrading to that too, but I found the 2500k was sufficient for my needs :)

Congrats on the switcharoo, I had the temptation to upgrading to that too, but I found the 2500k was sufficient for my needs :)

Before, when the boxes said 95W, this was the "MAXIMUM" TDP.

Now, it's "AVERAGE" TDP.

Please do keep in mind TDP does not equal power consumed...it equals cooling needed. ;)

You are correct: Strange how it say's that.

Here's a link to Intel's webpage on that chip clearly stating 77w.

Not strange at all..the same link used to say 95W as well, but after people bitched about it, they changed it.

Subject:
Customer Letter: Thermal Design Power Listing on Product Information Label for Boxed 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 and Intel® Core™ i5 Processors for the Desktop

The boxed processors identified in this notification have a marking of 95W on the Product Information Label attached to the side of the box. This is an indication of the Thermal Design Power (TDP) for the processor. The TDP/segment definition remains at 95W while actual measured power consumption for these processors is at or below 77W.

The design specification of 95W is utilized by both motherboard and thermal solution manufacturers to develop components that are compatible with both 2nd and 3rd generation Intel® Core™ Processors.

Some Intel documents list the TDP for these Intel Core processors at 77W which has caused some confusion. As a result, Intel will change the TDP listed on the Product Information Label to 77W. There is no functional difference of these processors listed at 95W as all conform to the 77W specification.

For a period of time there will be a mix of Channel inventory of these boxed processors with the TDP marked as 95W or 77W on the Product Information Label.

Warranty and Support Information

This change does not affect or modify any warranty or technical support obligation specified in the terms and conditions governing your original purchases of the boxed processors.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your Intel representative. Thank you for your support of the Intel Boxed Products program.

Sincerely,

Intel Corporation

I thought Ivy Bridge's highest rated TDP was only 77w? Why does that box say 95w? Misinformation or just lazy?

Yap it operates at 77W, CPU-Z Confirms it, Plus i used AIDA64 Extreme to check the Wattage and it was below 77W while encoding some video clips so on average it doesn't,go beyond 77W.

You are correct: Strange how it say's that.

Here's a link to Intel's webpage on that chip clearly stating 77w.

It only uses a maximum of 77W as I've confirmed above, plus it doesn't heat as people say on stock cooler it idles around 27c/28c and on load eg while encoding some 12 HD 720p Legend of Korra episodes to DVD its around 65c to a max of 70c while only taking 15min to complete the whole task vs the Intel Core i5-2500K's Stock Clock it took 25min on the same rig.

Before, when the boxes said 95W, this was the "MAXIMUM" TDP.

Now, it's "AVERAGE" TDP.

Please do keep in mind TDP does not equal power consumed...it equals cooling needed. ;)

Not strange at all..the same link used to say 95W as well, but after people bitched about it, they changed it.

cadaveca's explanation is the best, and the info about wattage was out before release i remember it being covered in TPU.

WinRAR benefits very mach from extra threads, this makes me happy coz i normally zip/split very many huge files using WinRAR and the downtime has reduced significantly.

For some reason my motherboard bios has set a turbo boost override, its an issue with the Intel BIOS 0035 so any way it has overridden my multiplier to 43 and since i have never over clocked using this motherboard i dont know how to set the turbo boost multiplier back turbo should be 3.9 GHz not 4.3 as indicated in the BIOS, so can anyone help me to know how to set it back if i want to. I'm running stock cooler, CPU idles around 28c/29c or sometimes less like 26c/27c max load temp i have seen is on average mostly 55c -60c on heavy load like WinRAR or encoding iv seen a max of 70c once then it drops back to 65c on average all this on stock cooler which i have less intention of changing

From you CPUz screen I see 1.240v at 4.1GHz. It's a little high for IB to reach that freq. and probably some auto-Oc function is selected in BIOS. Temp are above 60 but your load is barely at 25% so under real heavy load it might skyrocket provided you are on stock cooler. Check in your BIOS something like CPU ratio setting and set it to auto.

Can you disable the overclocking assistant? You have to change at processor overrides core max multiplier from 43 to 39 (if you can there).

Shame Intel hasn't adopted UEFI BIOS for their own boards considering they themselves have made it a requisite for future motherboards/chipsets.

My gigabyte board just got the UEFI update for it and it almost killed it with less features than the regular bios. I was lucky enough to find a way to downgrade back to the previous bios. I made a thread explaining how to do it.

Yeah Gigabytes UEFI implementation has been less than smooth. More of a tacked on afterthought. I just love ASUS's BIOS couldn't imagine going back to the "old school" BIOS.

I'm not sure if overclocking assistant has always been manual, let me take a look, the only thing i have ever set is XMP in memory section

Just checked it the only other option is automatic and has no multiplier

So i have installed Intel's XTU and it can allow me to change the multiplier so i turned them to where they should be the voltage does drop but decided to it at 4.30 overridden turbo boost, coz after running CPU stress test and memory stress test plus other tests of mine the computer seems to be stable so I'll use it with the overridden turbo boost, coz even at 100% CPU load temperature doesn't go past 80c, average is 76c which if fine while using stock cooler and i highly don't think what i do will ever stress it that much anyway.

Thanks to all that tried to help me with the overclocking issue, the good news is Intel has released a BIOS update 0036 which has resolved all the issues i mentioned on the above posts, Now i can see the multiplier and i can adjust it accordingly, even the temperature doesn't go past 70c on stock cooler even when running stress test which loads all CPU cores to 100% and temperature doesn't go past 70c now I'm way happier that i made the choice to purchase the i7-3770. and when performing my other encoding test temperature doesn't go past 65c on the stock cooler
