Hey guy'z, was considering getting an additional HD4870 1GB and try out Tri-Fire setup with my current HIS 4870X2, would it be much of an improvement in performance or not? thought of getting a second 4870x2 but iam also gonna have to change the psu (which currently is a Corsair HX620) and that would be outta my price range, so do you think an additional 4870 1GB is worth the try and would my current psu handle it or not??

thanx in advanced, really appreciate the help...........

Thanx for the prompt reply, about your question (which is good btw) actually no maybe 1 or two gamez, iam a GTAVI addict and some times i get some annoying artifacts thats why i thought of adding the additional card but i don't know if iam gonna benefit any performance improvement and one other thing is that i found a really good deal on the card (really good deal) and i thought it would help in future coming gamez, so thats my reason it might not be convincing to some but what can i do iam a h/w freak & i really wanna try CF/TF...

Well about a year ago I would have said "No freakin way" but since the 4870s are now $139 and drivers that work better its not as easy to say "NO"

Personally I think 2 4870s is pretty good with a 24" LCD and smaller. My mobo has 4 slots but I wouldnt add the third card because it just isant worth it (even at $139) to me.

There re a few here at TPU that use a 4870X2 and a 4870 together, wait to see what they have to say.

EDIT: just saw you had a 22", Now I would say NO....(not worth it)

And about the PS I would say it may work (but you would really be forcing the PS to its limits) My 2 4870s and a Phenom II 940 would hit 500watts of draw if I forced them (about 275-325watts at idle), add another 4870 and there would be no extra headroom at all.

I would leave ur comp as it is, the 620 is a kick ass pS, the 4870 X2 is also a kick ass card.. why mess with perfection?

I have been wondering about this myself, The X2 is an amazing card, however it's not perfect. Power consumption is off the charts when you really push it. In terms of price for performance, as someone who payed 550 dollars for his X2, I would probably would have gone with dual 216s if I could do it all over again, but oh well.
