Hi guys,

So finally tried to overclock i7 950, messed with some settings i found on overclock.net here (http://www.overclock.net/intel-motherboards/662236-asus-p6x58d-premium-e-thread-17.html#post8440597), tried some out whilst tweaking and when it reached the 'starting windows' it crashed. so i loaded default settings from bios and now it won't even load into windows again. I can get back into windows after messing with cpu voltage some more but this doesnt make sense when it was running okay on default beforehand. Is it damaged or am i just doing something wrong here?

Also using H60 corsair cooler.

p.a Can anyone point me in a good direction for a noobie? I have overclocked in the past but this was a good few years ago, a lot has changed and i feel like a complete novice again.

Did it default to IDE instead of your preset AHCI/RAID or the other way around?

Can you get into the Bios?

Most likely the memory is not set correctly.

Please post memory specs as indicated on the sticker on the ram.

You need to set memory specs manually. ie 9-9-9-24, 2N... leave other fields on Auto.
Set memory voltage manually.

Leave cpu voltage on Auto if you already picked a number then Type "auto" in field.

Yep. I'm currently formatting, but still very much open to ideas as i will continue trying to overclock once its done.

EDIT: Format is finished and i can now get into windows. wtf? Any ideas why this happened for when i try overclocking again?

Most likely a memory issue, my ASUS board does the same.
It does it every time I up the bios to new version.
I have to manually reset fields and due to bios change doesn't seem to work the same way twice.
I also recommend picking a lower memory speed in the 1600 range first, so it will boot.: still using the numbers on the ram sticker.

CPU, VTT/QPI leave on auto. Set Memory voltage per sticks. As you only have 3 slots filed then that should be ok.

You should not have to reformat.

I was sure it was an IDE vs AHCI conflict :/

It shouldn't happen again, but I suggest trying to OC before installling anything after Windows so that you don't lose too much time

Default is IDE but Windows 7 anyways will boot to it either way, Windows auto corrects itself for IDE or AHCI then requires a reboot.
To save time and a second reboot I make sure to set to AHCI for both hard drive bandwidths, Sata II 3Gbs and Sata III 6Gbs. They are not located in the same part of the bios.

Not sure what you said here, but I know for a fact that if you installed Windows as AHCI on that SSD and didn't mess with the reg, when trying to boot through IDE it will not work.

I just state the facts and get to my point, I mean no offense. I'm also not passing the brightest passage in my life.

Either way, I speak the truth. As far as I can tell, I have done nothing to offend you.

Can you agree with me that we can assume the SSD is the boot drive here? You understand why I come to that conclusion? If you do I don't see why you would see any offense to my post

P.S: I love how you chose "mean-spirited" but in that thread it mentions how much I donate etc :p You could say I act a bit like a know-it-all maybe, but I'm not mean-spirited :D

overclocking (and crashing) can f' up important system files, especially during boot. I've done it 100's of times. make an image of your disk before you overclock and you'll be fine when it decides to pack up again.

Agreed, when you overclock too high and are unstable, your system files can become corrupted when your cpu/ram go to access those files. Weather its being corrupted in memory, or just can not correctly process the loading of files.

You need to be careful when overclocking, as it has been stated a million times. It's on you if you fubar something up. This one was not so bad ;-)

Something to add regarding removing the motherboard battery and waiting. To speed this process up do this.
1. Unplug the power supply from the wall.
2. Remove the motherboard battery.
3. Instead of waiting 5 minutes for the voltage to "drain" hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
4. Insert the motherboard battery.
5. Plug in the power supply to the wall.
6. Power on.

Did not install windows in achdi mode, never done this. :ohwell:

Actually having pretty underwhelming results with regards to heat. Got a brand new H60 cooler and its pretty crap tbh. I don't know what im doing wrong, but i've got air pulling from the front of my 1200, while the heat sink of the H60 is attached behind the rear fans which are pushing air out (and the hot air from the heat sink). Sitting about 38*-40*c (in this COLD winter UK weather) and hitting around 60*C on load (like an hour of BF3) @ 1.176v/3.60ghz. Prime had it at 70*C @ 100% load.

These sound about right to you guys? Doesn't leave much room for more overclocking does it?

I know some people are saying pulling in from front and pulling in from the back and exhausting through the top can be good, i just don't see how it beats the tried and true method.

Ah i see! So that must have been it. Thanks.

My CPU gets to 90+ C on intel burnt test. i7 920/30/50 etc can withstand 85C 24/7 no problem lol

You have lots of room ;) I corrupted my Windows only when I went past 4.25Ghz, so that should usually not happen anything close to your OCs.

Your OS is on the SSD yes? But in the BIOS is it in AHCI or IDE? It is important for an SSD to be in AHCI

Your OS is on the SSD yes? But in the BIOS is it in AHCI or IDE? It is important for an SSD to be in AHCI

Both mechanical and SSD can be run in AHCI.

Maybe we can help better if we know your target overclock.

The memory gets very fussy with the x58 platform.
Are you setting manually or XMP?

Yup, I'm just saying that for HDDs it isn't as important as it is for the SSD to be in AHCI

I'd say 3.8Ghz is an EASY goal to reach

If your ambient is low at the moment, and you have a liquid cooler, you should be able to get better temps ?
