I have a SMC router that hooks up to my broadband modem and a bunch of other computers. I have a Linksys router hooked up to the SMC router. All computers hooked up to linksys have an internet connection. The problem is I don't know how to identify the ip given to linksys router by the SMC. Linksys router does show the SMC routers ip as default gateway however.

SMC Router: 192.168.2.1 and assigns 192.168.2.x
Linksys Router: 192.168.1.1 and assigns 192.168.1.x
x = ip of computers.

Both routers have class C. Subnets are both 255.255.255.0

Depends on how you have it connected to the SMC. I am not sure, but if it is being used as a gateway and not a router, then it is just a network extender and has no IP. The connection between it and the primary host/DNS (in this case the SMC router) is a constant direct link using the MAC address.

If it does have an IP address, it has to show up in the SMC table of connected devices. Please note it may have some kind of odd identifier or name, so just find it by process of elimination by accounting for all the other connections and marking them off. Whatever is not a computer, iPhone, PS3, etc. is the router.

main question: why are you running two routers? usually its best to set it to bridge/access point mode, and just have one router doing DHCP.

Well to answer that question, I only have 1 switch. I'm trying to save myself $60 by substituting one with a router. Anything other than that is only 10mbs. I could do without but that would mean drilling another hole in my wall :L. I refuse to use wireless ever, only on my laptop.

Linksys:
Wan: 00-06-25-6F-80-3E
Lan: 00-06-25-6F-80-30

SMC Client Table
ip=192.168.2.147 mac=00-06-25-6F-80-3E name=0006256F803E
ip=192.168.2.138 mac=00-10-DC-AD-EF-B6 name=Fedora90-2ftp
ip=192.168.2.182 mac=00-1B-FC-6F-BC-C5 name=ubuntu
ip=192.168.2.113 mac=00-24-1D-DD-06-D8 name=Blackbird307-PC
ip=192.168.2.180 mac=00-02-55-BF-4D-DC name=kopache-5xu2b1
ip=192.168.2.150 mac=00-02-72-68-07-78 name=Q9Y9J3
ip=192.168.2.191 mac=00-11-5B-2D-29-FA name=sempron-590d2d8fcb

The linksys router does show up on the client table with a funny name.
However when I try to ping 192.168.2.147 it says destination unreachable. Is this normal?

right, well do what i said above then - disable all routing/DHCP functions on the second router, and it will become a dumb device like a switch/wireless access point and wont cause you any problems.

Actually I think that is normal. Routers can't respond to ping request....I don't think. Their primary job is negotiation and transmission. It would need to route the packet to a computer of something that can understand the packet is a ping request and respond accordingly. In this case, I think the router will read the header, note the IP doesn't match a computer on its network and drop it.

Like above, turn off DHCP or switch modes to gateway. It will act as a repeater/network extender.

routers reply to ping requests, it's just an icmp message. it can be blocked though.

+1 on turning off dhcp

Well if you got spiff or security enabled it blocks IMCP Traffic. I would disable all the security on both routers until you do what Mussels said he is right, anything after the first router should have routing and DHCP disabled and be used as a switch.

btw I am a network admin --- I also help dev dd-wrt and backtrack

+1 to Mussels for a good answer

his problem is that the first router and the second router are both running DHCP and therefore, their own seperate networks. If you've been given an IP from network 1, you cant access PC's on network 2 (aka router 2)

Mussels is correct he put all his pc's on 2 different subnets and there for can't see one another.
