UHD Monitor but laptop only goes to 1920x1080 in external mode

Just got a UHD TV, but can't display its resolution. Why am I not able to display this? It should support 3840 x 2160 resolution.

My laptop is a K53sv Asus

I could be wrong, but I think the HDMI port on that laptop is only HDMI 1.2(maybe 1.3), so it won't support 3840x2160. I think the GT 540M only supports up to 2560x1600 anyway.
