When an undersea fiber optic cable, who's sole job is to connect countries and continents, is cut, bad things happen. Entire countries, or even continents, can lose internet access, and entire chunks of the world can appear to go offline. When one was cut a week ago, nobody really considered it that big a deal, because the owner would replace it soon anyways. However, the owner has done no such thing, has not paid for any form of investigation, and merely watches as more cables are cut. Thus far, no less than five cables that run under the ocean have been lost, all five being in the middle east. Worse still, it would seem as though the owner is not looking into the exact cause of the cables all failing within one week of each other. Hopefully, action will be taken soon, and places near Southern Asia and the Middle East will have internet once again.

That's horrible they won't mount an investigation or fix.

where do you guys get your 'info' from?

    read this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7228315.stm

Work begins to repair severed net

"The ship that will repair the first severed cable is already in place, with repairs underway, while the second vessel is expected to begin work on Tuesday."

"The cause of the damage has not been officially confirmed but there have been reports that the breaks were related to a tanker dragging its anchor along the sea bed."

dont see physical "hard lines" are really that important anyway since satelites can bounce signals anywhere you want to connect so its not like comunications are cut off, its more likely only effecting secure hard wired telephone lines that cant be listened in on as easily.

Fiber optics can carry far more information than satellites. Also, most satellites probably don't have much extra bandwidth sitting around to be used.

I cannot believe this is happening?? I wonder if there is any idea who is behind this. If it is terrorism you would think they would strike a larger demographic area, regardless its amazing its happening. I hope to hear the reasons behind this

Its just a line from a movie (Team America), and I honestly don't feel bad making fun of terrorists. I didn't say Al Qaeda was the only terrorist group in the world, I'm mostly Irish and well aware of the IRA. Its good to know you care about the terrorist's feelings.

    >.> there are alot of undersea volcanoes in the area, some of which are constantly shifting. when they say "the owner", I think it's one guy who owns all of these cables, and was just too lazy to find an area where they wouldn't be screwed over.

I highly doubt the american government is behind it, but i guess anything is possible. Cutting cables seems alittle petty, and I think we could come up with something alittle better than that

If the US gov coordinated an attack to black out the ME a lot more would be happening than a few undersea cable cut.

On the flip-side, if pointing fingers blatantly interests you, a smarter choice would be the Jehadi Terrorists? After all, they're nucleated around this part of the world? Besides, if America blanks out our internet, Americans suffer too in not being able to get their Dell support on time.
