Upgrade CPU?

Now I know a lot of you guys will tell me I need a whole new system but for right now my budget/wife wont let me. However I do have a little extra spending cash and feel like I "need" an upgrade. Currently I have a 939 socket x2 4200+ and I was looking at a AMD Opteron X2 180 2.40GHz - 2MB Cache - 1000MHz - Socket 939 for about 180 bucks.

Now is spending that money going to give me much of a speed boost in gaming or a decrease? I'm not familiar with Opterons and I would hate to toss a 180 bucks in the trash.

If you plan on doing some overclocking then sure. From owning my Opty 170, I haven't had much time to overclock, but i hear Opterons are very good overclockers. I've also been able to play recent games with playable FPS. However, I am not sure on how much of a boost you will get out of switching to the Opteron 180.

Benchmark wise, Opteron 175 = X2-4400
and an Opteron 180 = X2-4800
and the Opteron 185 = X2-5200 = FX-60

Opteron for servers not for gaming pc , if your mobo support phenom go for phenom 9950BE it is come with 2m L2 cash and 2m L3 cash that's mean 4m cash with 2.6 speed and it is about 180$

Well that damn sure ain't worth the money. Opt. 180 = 4800+ is crap for an upgrade.

What i would do is save about $100 more for a core duo system.You will not see a huge gain... not 200 worth anyway with the opteron but they do game fine.You could also get a deal used or maybe even new intel system for $200 and that would be worth it both in games and applications.

Man, no way would I throw $180 at an opteron. I mean, you can get a P35/E5200/DDR2 ram that will OWN an opteron.

I have had the E1200 and the E5200 pwns it. Honestly, my X2 3600 Brisbane whooped up on the poor E1200. I sold it 2 days after buying it.
