hey u just said that even overcloked HD 5870 won't have a chance to GTX 480, and if you look closely u will see that even "standard" HD5870 outperform GTX 480 (in few games that is)

hey it's doesn't matter if it can't clock higher, i'm just comparing the two architecture and not comparing who has higher clock

look around different reviews say different things my card overclocked beats my mates HD5850 and his is overclocks way passed normal speeds of a HD5870.

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/32...870_1gb_super_overclock_video_card/index.html and it still doesn't beat the stock gtx in the majority of the test. If the 480 gtx was oced it would destroy it.

wut, i don't against tweak town, but it's just only small collection of games, and where is CRISYS, so just like i said earlier, it's depends on what games are you playing, and just like wizz said (why the hell we go to TPU if we don't trust wizz) it's just a mere 7% different.

Once again, the GTX480 costs so much, consumes so much power, is so hot-running, that it can only be compared to 5970. And the 5970 just kills it, oc or not. And a dual gpu Nvidia is just not happening! Period!

Again who said we didn't trust WIzzard. I said that a overclocked 480 gtx which most will do over 800 and using non beta drivers as WIzzards review used 2 months ago will kill a 5870.

Says who? and maybe in your country.

yeah but dual GPU is meh. Especially when you have to rely on ATI drivers... the real conteders are the non reference cooled 5870's like the MSI lighting w/ volt tweak that can do 1.1Ghz on air IMO.

But still a highly OC'd 480 will win hands down these cards gain massive FPS when OC'd.

@trt can you post a vantage P run on your card so we can see the GPU score? plzzzzzzzzz?

Show me where I said that, because I didn't.

ummm, this

My point is the 480 gtx is 200.00 cheaper than a 5970 and the same price as a 2gb 5870 and it will smack both a 5870 and 5870 2gb around when overclocked, yet come very near 5970 performance when oced. Thats my point :D If your a green person, want crossfire only, have low air flow in your case, or you have a weaker power supply, or endless pocket book. Then go with a 5870 or the later mentioned more expensive 5970. However, don't say a 5870 is on par with a 480 gtx because the fact is it is not and most times evenoverclocked it isn't. There is my point as clear as I can state it. Thats not to say a 5870 is a chump card or that I wouldn't buy it , because I have and I would , but a 480 gtx is alot more powerful, not a little, alot. Imagine how much farther the gap will be when it's drivers mature.

im comparing both cards looking back at the reviews the 480 does performance better than a stock 5870 crysis and a few other is doesn't do well on like i said drivers take time to get right there still fix bugs in games like BF BC loading time when ATI has already any ways im login off for the night work in 5 hour NEED SLEEP

and I onced again didn't say what you said I did. In a few benchmarks a oced 5870 at 1000 core will match a stock 480 gtx.

I can but in vantage the two cards are very close but in games they aren't.

if your gonna upgrade get a 5970 for a single card upgrade or just get another 5870. Sounds like you want the fastest single card out and if thats the case why settle for the gtx480, go all the way with the 5970.

Don't get mad when your wrong, the 5870 is a very good card but not as fast as a 480 gtx, not even with 2gb of ram. It can come close at 1000 core but thats it close.

Crysis a crappy game to bench on and is not a very well designed engine at all. If I remember correctly it took a long time for ATI to get the drivers right on the 5870 series. Also who in the heck plays that game anymore. Thats is a driver issue that geforce will fix, one bench mark is hardly anything to mention.

here is a newer review take a look using Crysis.

hey u said that HD 5870 not even close to GTX 480, but i think 7% pretty dam close.

also crysis was the most demanding game period, and if that was nvdia driver issue then i don't care because we compare based on performance now not future (and after all we can't predict it)

please don't get so much emotional in debate. just chill out

No, geforce wont fix anything. If it is going to be fixed, it will be Nvidia fixing it. :)

my 2c

keep the 5870, as said its only a 7>10% increase so what 5,6,7 FPS extra, big whoop when you are getting a decent enough frame rate, plus a larger power bill

searching www.staticice.com (aussie search site for pc stuff)

$440 is the cheapest 5870 ive found and the $640 for the gtx 480 ($200 differance)

by the time you sell the 5870 for what $300au if that, you are still looking at a extra $360 to upgrade, spend the extra $80 and go crossfire 5870's and dont look back

and as a plus less heat and lower power bill expecialy at idle (17w per card :) )

Come on guys, dont make this into another ATi VS nVidia thread. The OP wants to know if its a worthwhile upgrade. The GTX 480 is better than the 5870, but only by a max 10% difference, and IMO its not a worth to upgrade from an HD 5870 to GTX 480 as you will see a very tiny difference for a huge sum of cash. Might as well save up some more and get a 5970.

he wants to know if its a worth while upgrade..................... ERM nope. period! end of thread.

It runs alot hotter and has little over-clocking room due to the heat output of the card. If you want to grab an nvidia card that bad then get one. The 5870 can be overclocked to 1000 core with good airflow and a small voltage increase (which can be done with software). A 5870 with 1000 core and 1250 on the memory (which is what mine is at) it beats a stock 480 in 85% of testing ive done. There are always games that nvidia will win in so that accounts for the 15% and it won them marginally. (2-5fps)

If you want a nvidia card that bad then get one but I would say its not a worth while upgrade. Also on a personal note I think they wont hold their value due to the large heat output and the general buzz around the internet about the 400 series.
