Your wasting money on a K series i5 if your going to choose that Motherboard. It won't be as overclock friendly as a Z87 which is the board for that CPU.

I'd maybe stick with your 8GB RAM, ditch the SSD and sell your 660 and upgrade your GPU as well with the saved money ;) +1 on motherboard, you want Z87 if you're going to overclock otherwise just get a non K i5 :toast:

Whether 8GB is adequate depends on how the rig is used. For newer games and 3GB-4GB GPU's, 8GB is the absolute minimum.

A 2GB GTX660 may get away with 8GB, but only just...pagefile will be needed at times. You can always throw in another 8GB later if necessary..

If the pagefile is needed, more RAM is needed.

your corrent system specs…

Processor: i3 2100 3.10GHz
Motherboard: MSI H61M-P25 (B3)
Memory: Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz HyperX Blu
Video Card(s): Nvidia gtx 660
Hard Disk(s): Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB+600gb
Optical Drive: Asus 24x DVD±RW
LCD/CRT Model: SAMSUNG S22B350 Full HD 22" LED Monitor
Case: Antec 300
Power Supply: Corsair 520w modular
Software: Windows 7

given those specs… you must replace just motherboard, processor and if you want add an SSD, video card still "OK" for moment… maybe you can upgrade it later…

given budget: £350 max? live on UK?

there you have:

Gigabyte z97 ud5h blk = £176.56
Intel Core i5 4690K = £178.29

your best spent....£350

Ram memory, case, and no ssd requeired for getting better board and processor... you can also upgrade on a near future the cooler.. and also get better cooler and SSD for a boost! and future overclock... at stocks speeds this i5 will be a ultra improvement over your current rig!

Regards,

Both items would be good for you and provided your Cpu cooler is good you got the basis of a system that will overclock reasonably well
(Evo 212 cooler is very good for its price point )
Extra ram you can add later as also a SSD

amazon good retailer to deal with

Do NOT buy from ebuyer... after 6 months they won't honor warranties, instead give you a precalculated partial refund for your items.

Amazon and Scan on the other hand are very good

Well, while you were out, we had an extensive thread on this subject. 8GB is becoming obsolete quickly. BLOPS 3 needs more. Assassin's Creed Sydicate will need 6 as a minimum, and 8 as recommended. From a year ago we have DA:I which with normal Windows processes, pushes close to 7.5GB RAM usage. With a little more time I could probably come up with more, including upcoming games which push that limit.

Many people disagree with this assessment, but I have been saying the 16GB day requirement is coming sooner than people think. And for people staying on DDR3-based systems, I advise getting that additional 8 before DDR3 starts going up in price due to stockpiles dwindling or they will be in for a big expense later, either by trying to secure higher-priced DDR3 or upgrading to a DDR4-based system.

BLOPS3 has a memory leak, thats why it eats all the ram it can. Doesn't mean it needs it.

@rtwjunkie Wow, OK. I mean I'm upgrading to 16gb anyway purely because it is cheap as chips not because I need it. Interesting to see what happens over the next year or so.

@stuartb04 To the op, I would keep the suggestion of the 4690k but lower the cost of the suggested board. Mine was below 100 quid and its awesome. Maybe try and sell the 660 and use that cash plus remaining funds to pick up a new gfx card like a 960 4gb....they can be had for as little as 150 quid now.

8GB of RAM is already the minimum requirement for Fallout 4. Even if it does say the same for recommend settings, this tells something about how the actual usage of RAM in the future will be (depends on the person's way of using PC).

You see, I had this computer in 2008. It has 8GB of RAM and my (old) video card has 1792MB. At that time, 8GB considered overkill, even 4GB too. When some people knew about my 8GB on my computer, they say: "What a waste of money, your computer would be cheaper if it has less memory than that". You know, I opened so many tabs, had some not so big apps, running Windows Update and had one big app and then it is already close to full or it has like 2GB when I can't use 7zip Ultra compression without slowing down my system or easily making my PC running out of memory!. My system is even pretty in minimal state regarding unnecessary background processes and I even have devices disabled if not used like Wifi and Network cards.

MY video card..... Because of that amount of VRAM I have, I managed to be able to still play games that would simply refuse to play or run slower. the GTX 260 comes with 896MB or 1792MB. Imagine if I had the 896MB of VRAM!
My video card will refuse to play games early after I got it with my PC.
I might left my PC too long without upgrading or changing it, but it keeps me going with almost everything except the games that requires DX11 which is fine to me till I upgrade (I wanted to upgrade long time ago but there are some difficulties which I don't to talk about right now).

nope, pounds not euros and it makes sense to upgrade ddr3 at the moment purely because of cost.

there you have...

hoping i can save money too.!
have about £300 to spend....£350 at a push
so here is the following i have so far selected.....

Why are you trying to tell some that is looking for a boost on performance.. upgrading from i3 and h61 chipset… to get more ram when 8GB are enough for playing several games on low, mid resolution and getting new hardware such as i5 and excellent chipset such z97?

why try to confuse someone that has a pretty tight budget and want get the best from that peny? that's why I don’t understand here… he does not even on plans to game on ultra or high settings due its mid range video card, and the last comment mentioning games that are well known for memory optimization issues…

lol @ the pic. Well, I don't see an urgent need to upgrade. Granted, the CPU is lacking but it's still adequate.

If I were you, I'd wait for Xmas/ New year sales.
