upgrade to 1150

been waiting a while to jump off my i7875k. been thinking the devils canyon i5 and a gigabyte z97 would it be worth it? or will i downgrade going i7 to i5

Devil's Canyon is Haswell with a little better thermal interface basically.

The difference between your 875k and a 4670k is very noticeable and worth the upgrade IMHO. If you had a 2500k or newer/better CPU, I would not endorse the upgrade. Compared to the 4670k, the 4690k should be a little cooler running CPU because of the change Intel did with the thermal compound used in assembling the 4690k. Other than that, the 4670k and 4690k are pretty much the exact same CPU.

cheers m8. i was looking at some asrock boards for their cost efficiency but last one i had was not good at all (long time agoo skt 775 i think). how are they for overclocking? and long term durability is a must. i have had my current rig for like 3 to 4 yrs now

IMHO, not worth the upgrade.
Tom's Hardware has a gaming CPU hierarchy chart and states: " I don’t recommend upgrading your CPU unless the potential replacement is at least three tiers higher." Your 875K is in their second tier.
I doubt that you will see much if any difference. Yes, you will gain USB3, SATA3 and PCI-e 3.0, (and maybe M.2) but none of them are actually that big of a deal. The sad thing, which Intel recently admitted, is that there really has not been that much of an upgrade to the desktop platform since P55. I'd want M.2, USB 3.1, and a Broadwell, or maybe even Skylake (DDR4), CPU. Half to three quarters of a year should net you a real upgrade.

What is your 875K currently clocked at?

I went from an 875K@4.2GHz to a 4790K@4.6GHz and the difference is definitely noticeable. The i7 only gives hyperthreading, so if you are mainly gaming it is useless. The 4690k would still be a good upgrade if your focus is gaming.

And I've been way happy with my AsRock board as well. Though if I was buying now I'd probably go with the Extreme4 instead of the Extreme6 I got. The only reason I went with the Extreme6 is because the Extreme6 was bundled with my CPU for the same price as the Extreme4.

i have been seriously contemplating getting the 4790k. i really like my 8 core right now and am hestiant to give it up. i had an i5 1156 and didnt care for it. i think that would hold me over another couple years. i dont really think im going to wait another half year fr me its a now or never thing and if i dont get it ill end up spending on something else

I noticed how you've "eaten around the edges" of your system with upgrades. There's nothing wrong with upgrading now, and being the first to adopt a new Intel platform has not been the wisest choice in recent history.

my i7 for some reason wont hold a stable oc anymore runs at stock due to instability. not at first but after a day or so no matter what the oc the system locks up

its kinda correct says that your 875K is a pretty old processor, but they can perform pretty good, in my office I have one Lynnfield processor, they are strong enough now days taks and some games,

Difference working and doing some graphic design its unnoticeable, I haven't play resource hungry games on my work rig… but I'm pretty sure that differences will be minimum, also if I had a decent GPU and Motherboard on my work Rig I'm sure that things will be different, but it belongs to my office so I would not modify it, I hope it will last another 3 years for work and stuff….

I wish I could have a Ggiabyte GA-P55A-UD7Motherboard, At least a Water 2.0 Pro, GTX 660Ti and another SSD for my Work Rig, to make it more future Proof, I love this old guy

Probably deteriorated, getting too hot, or chip/mobo/ psu cant take it anymore. You had your 875K specified in system specs Thats why i was unsure.

temp never goes much above 40-45c. but yes i think it is degraded some. it used to hit 4.5ghz all day long. i been putting this upgrade off for a year but now movies and even facebook causes lock ups

With 1151 and Skylake coming out soon, which support DDR4, I wouldn't jump on 1150. And by the time they launch, I wouldn't doubt the DDR4 will be available in CAS 11 and lower in price.

Skylake definitely isn't coming out soon. Most places are saying we won't see Skylake until Q3 2015, and even then those won't be overclockable unlocked parts. We won't see K series Skylake until at least Q4 2015. So we won't see a usable desktop Skylake until basically the end of the year, that isn't exactly "coming out soon".
