Sounds defective to me. It's been like 4 days that this PSU has been in my system.

It shouldn't be screeching.

Just played some black ops.. it does it there too, but not as loud as during the character log in of WoW.
I'm so lost.

Are you certain it's psu and not the graphics card?

If it is the PSU that noise normally means the caps are going to blow soon.

Which is obviously not a good thing, if it happens whilst the system is on you could short out all your gear D:

a lot of nvidia cards just squeal, its 'normal' - especially at really high FPS (low loading games with Vsync off)

Not just nVidia cards. AMD cards squeal as well. My HD4870X2 was more than capable of nearly screaming its coils off.

in my experience, i've only ever heard it on nvidia cards.

then again, i've owned more Nv than ATI so its likely a biased sample.

Now i'm not reccomending you do this, but it's worth looking into, I've seen people short the rails on their PSUs (for certian physics experiments). in theory, this should give maxim load on the rail that is shorted, from v/r=i.

If you were to unattach your psu, and short the rails out, you could listen whether it was the psu screeching and also attach a voltmeter to determine whether you get stable voltages.

Again, you'd need to do some research to see if this was safe to do for your PSU, as normally shorting a power supply would result in a blown fuse, although some psu's have current regulators limiting the maximum current.

If it's a new psu, it might be worth just putting it in a diff computer to check and then RMA'ing if it's faulty

It's funny you recommend that. I'm taking Electronics Engineering at college and this is the shit I do on a daily basis, Meters and all, lol; however I don't think I'll be doing anything like that. I'm not that great at this stuff yet.. still learning and such! Good ol' ohms law and circuit analysis xD

Right! Making progress! Well, I think it's fair to consider the graphics card too, the PSU fan and the graphics card are only a few centimeters away from each other. I put my head basically inside the case (safely) and I could swear it's the PSU.. but it would also make sense that it could be the graphics card fan because the screeching changes pitches and gets higher or lower (in terms of the pitch of the screech) when I click different characters in my character login screen because they have different 3d rendered backgrounds... and if you get crazy FPS with no vsync (which is what I have it set to) maybe it's the graphics card fan speeding up for insane FPS on better 3d backgrounds for different characters.

That would also explain why I can barely hear the screeching but it is still there when I play other games at like 110 fps.. because it's not quite making the fan go insane but its still pushing it.

But if I was still hearing it SLIGHTLY at 110 fps.. that doesn't sound normal. 110 FPS in Black Ops isn't a mind blowing number.

you probably need to do a full new driver installation. I can't stress it anymore but no matter when you install a new card you should always do a fresh driver installation

Heres how you do it:

1. Go download Driver Sweeper and Catalyst 10.4 drivers or 10.5(when i had a 5870 the 10.4 and 10.5 for the best drivers)

2. uninstall catalyst control center from Add and remove programs

3. restart system into safe mode

4. Open up Driver sweeper

5. check 'ATI' and click clean

6. exit driver sweeper and restart to normal mode

7. Install the new drivers

And thats it. you should be good. and overclock your CPU a little bit more. will also help more. 3.4GHZ shouldnt be a problem for the Q9300. just be sure to stress test it for 8hrs+ in prime95 and make sure the temperatures stay under id say 65c.

Looking at your PSU id definitely invest in a better one from either antec, Seasonic, or corsair. you dont need a 1000w psu for your rig. look at a Antec True power new 750, Seasonic X750, or Corsair HX750

I'm going to do the driver sweeper stuff you recommended. Thanks man.

Although, I can't overclock my processor with this shitty heat sink I have. It's the intel one that comes with the processor and I've been told to get rid of it immediately.

I had it at 3.0ghz but it was already reaching 65-70 while minimized out of a game. I need to get a better heatsink.

Hence saying what I said dude, re-read lol :toast:

Edit: reading other posts it's not the fan that whines on graphics cards, it's normally the mosfet area making noise, my 6870 screaches like hell in furmark.

So you're saying it's normal?

Edit: Turning VSYNC on in WoW made the screeching 100% go away.

If it's the video card making the noise than yeah it's completely normal.

If it's psu doing it you need a new psu.

wow... wtf tpu this has to be the most off the wall unorganized advice thread ive ever seen on this forum.

edit: catalyst AI...

But seriously, some people dont seem to have any idea what their talking about and just pull stuff from other threads that other people said and throw it up as a solution...

agreed, pretty embarassing some of the advice given. They didn't even read his initial post properly:shadedshu Glad you seem to have it sorted now :toast:

Maybe it's because they don't eat the same breakfast...

His ram is different than mine. It's 600mhz.

I plan on swapping the cards soon, just waiting for a time when my father isn't working.

Shouldn't matter, just underclock your existing ram.

Is there something about his processor that makes it perform better perhaps?

Computer screeching is gone. WoW runs GREAT with Vsync on locked in at 60fps.

My computer is literally freezing my room out even with my heater on full everywhere around my case feels like an air conditioner.

I think everything is working fine which indicates what was previously said: BC2 is a hog on CPU and possibly memory?

Your system looks as if it should run the game fine. Have you tried overclocking the CPU just a little to see if there are any improvements with BC2?

I'm going to do the driver sweeper stuff you recommended. Thanks man.

Although, I can't overclock my processor with this shitty heat sink I have. It's the intel one that comes with the processor and I've been told to get rid of it immediately.

I had it at 3.0ghz but it was already reaching 65-70 while minimized out of a game. I need to get a better heatsink.

yes get rid of it and get like a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ or Xigmatek Darknight

EDIT: did the driver thing help at all??

I cleaned up my drivers. No noticeable difference. I did notice however that I had my resolution in game (BC2) set to 1440x900 *75 instead of *60 (* being the refresh rate). It didn't make much of a difference. Still working on it.
