Q9300 has 6MB of cache between 4 cores (1.5MB each), while the Q6600 has 8MB (2MB each)

that may well be the cause for your lower performance.

I cleaned up my drivers. No noticeable difference. I did notice however that I had my resolution in game (BC2) set to 1440x900 *75 instead of *60 (* being the refresh rate). It didn't make much of a difference. Still working on it.

you just need to get a new heatsink and overclock the Q9300 to the max and then upgrade next year to Sandy Bridge or something

Yeah. I think it's safe to say that nothing is functioning abnormally or broken or anything. It seems like I'm just missing processing power which until I get a better heat sink I'll have to deal with.

Thanks for all your help guys.

It just seems odd. I was running the game off of a E6300, 4gigs of ram and a HD4850 for a while (@1920x1080) with everything on high, and I had an average of 30-40 FPS (Mind you, I did not have AA on and AF was set to 8x). So it really shouldn't be your processor, that just does not make any sense. My friend runs the game off of his E8200, and it runs fine for him as well. I would seriously check out the PSU. I hear of same issues on other forums (that PSU can cause performance issues if it is undervolted).

I really, really, really think it has something to do with me having 3 gigs of ram. So far I haven't seen anyone post who didn't have 4 gigs of ram, plus everyone I game with has at least 4.

I'm gonna swap out the PSU's and RMA mine if it is faulty and if not I'm leaving it at memory/processor.

Running a 1gb gpu on a 3gb rig means Windows is forced to use the much slower pagefile alot more than it would on a 4gb rig. I found this out while looking up the pros and cons of going from 4gb to 8gb.

Now that I have 8gb, there is little or no use of my pagefile. :D and dxdiag likes it too lol.. 4gb:rockout: video ram ! lmao

I'm probably wrong, but I thought some chipsets were capable of dual channel with mis-matched sizes...

AMD can do it. Not sure about s775.

I'm not sure how you get that performance. Your rig should eat BFBC2. I use an e7400. It plays smooth. 1920x1080 60fps locked. :/ It doesn't matter even without the overclock. At stock still plays fine.

3 gigs of ram for $200 Alex. Seriously, when I went from 2GB of ram to 4GB of ram, I saw some seriously large jumps in game performance, nearly 20 FPS in Crysis.

Well I've got a 6870, which is a close approximation to the performance level of a 5870 with a Phenom II X4 945 (3.0ghz) and it has handled everything I have thrown at it so far. If you're running a 5870 with a quad core at 3.0ghz, it's most likely not a hardware issue or you'd probably be having bigger problems than just low fps in games. More likely you have Windows bloat. Years of installing and reinstalling software and drivers leaves a lot of crap behind that steals clock cycles. A backup and reinstall of Windows can fix a lot of problems. A defrag might also be in order if you haven't done one in a long time.

I tried my father's 4 gigs of ram which he gave me in the end, and it made a significant difference. No more FPS drops, so from the start it was just the RAM difference.

I'm probably going to do a fresh install of Windows on my other hard drive since apparently it's faster than my IDE drive just for the hell of it.

So I guess thread solved!! Thanks so much guys. Every time something seems abnormal with my PC I come here and I recommend it to all of my friends. Such a great community you guys have here.

Not necessarily. I run 6gb in dual channel. Matched pairs of 2gb, 2gb, 1gb, and 1gb. All 4 sticks don't have to match, just the two in the slots that are addressed together.

Try the extra gig of ram from your dad's machine in your's. x64 OS' can be finicky when playing games with the amount of ram they have available.

I can't run crysis with anything less than 4gb, but i don't know how intensive Bad Company is.

Told ya so :p

I'm glad you've got it all sorted out now :toast:

x64 OS's really do need a minimum of 4gb to run well. The Video Ram isn't shadowed like in x86 OS's but it comes with other drawbacks. There is a whole thread on video cards/gaming on a x86 vs. x64 thread somewhere. It's very informative.

And ditto with Jesus, glad u finally got it sorted. Don;t bother buying a whole new 4gb of ram, just buy one extra stick, the speed of the ram won't make much difference.

It made a huge difference in going from 2 to 6 gigs in overall performance in Windows 7 64 bit. I got a 7.5 index score in Windows 7 with DDR 2 800 RAM on an ASrock Geforce 8200 based motherboard. More memory really is a difference maker.

it is shadowed. its just that in x64 OS's you have much more address space to deal with.
