It launched four missiles at an Iranian ship back in 1988 when the Iranian ship failed to stop approaching a naval group and fired a missile (that missed) at the naval group.
As of now, the US Navy has no frigates (USS Simpson was the last). The littoral combat ships (USS Freedom and USS Independence) are leading to a new design that will be designated as the next generation of frigates coming in a decade.
It's a really interesting read.
