VGA for non-gamer?

I have decided to stop playing videos for a variety of reason, and now I'm thinking about getting rid of my 9600GT because I find an unnecessary source of heat in my pc annoying. My motherboard/CPU has no IGP so that means i'm going to to another gfx.

I mainly use this PC for web browsing , occasional video, some programs for physics simulation (they are mostly cpu intensive afaik)

Seeing that i know very little about low end gfx, what would be a sensible choice?

Seems like you are being picky, the 9600 GT isnt a hot video card, its low end by today's standards so no need to downgrade. Downclock the GPU and memory bus and flash it. But there is no benefit from this downgrade. If you want to stop playing games, then just STOP!

Finding a motherboard with integrated graphics might be a good choice if you're open to that. You can also look at the AMD 55xx series of graphics cards as they're small and don't produce much heat. I hope this helps! :toast:

You can probably get a decent G45/G35 motherboard for cheap. I had an asus G35 motherboard and it was even a decent overclocker.

interesting the VGA fans decided to die, I took off the fan shroud and see what happens to run the card passively.

Well, the temperature stabilizes at 53c. Since I can't hear it anymore I'm not going to worry about it, problem solved itself :laugh:

If you do decide to get a new card, a 9400GT or a G210 would be fine for non-gaming stuff

Intel GMA 4500

or if your buying a card. Something like a nVidia 9300 or 8400 is suitable. I bet you can find one of them for pretty cheap.

9600gts don't out put that much heat TBH.
