Ok my question is can I volt mod my stuff " evga 8800gts 512" and have it clock as high as the 9800gtx or does it clock higher because they are using higher binned stuff? I am supprised some one hasn't mentioned / thought of this yet. Maybe someone has and I just haven't crossed the thread.

Its possible, but unlikely, while i wouldnt put it past nvidia to make a card look hideously more complex just so people buy it, i think the extra voltage circuitry on the 9800 IS needed to run stably, though i bet you could get pretty damn close with an 8800gts voltmodded

And there, you got a response, useless as it may be:)

Mine clocks that high without a volt mod.

It is possible, but not likely. The 9800GTX uses faster memory than the 8800GTS, and the cores are most likely binned better also. Though with enough voltage anything is possible, but you would probably burn the card up first.

plus you're splitting hairs if you don't already have one. for a few dollars more you get higher clocks by default. hitting the same clocks on an 8800gts 512mb might just cost you more than those few dollars in aftermarket coolers, thermal pastes, etc.

if you can clock the same, which shouldnt be a problem apart from memory, then just write a bios that says 9800GTX and lord it over your mates, still you'd think an 8800GTS 512 @ 700+ core (link shaders) and stock memory will still par or beat a stock 9800GTX, wouldnt you?

Benchmark Scores It does boot up? I think.
OC'ing G92GTS to GTX speeds would be easy for what comes to GPU/shader freqs but pushing GTS' memory to 1100MHz 24/7 stable might not.

Yah the only way I would get mine to stay at 1100 would be better cooling on the chips and they already have ram sinks on them right now, the highest I could clock my evga 8800gts 512 was 820/2008/2248 and that was with cold air blowing right on the thing. I have a after market thermalright gt on it so the core keeps cool as can be like 32c idle 52c full load no matter how high I push it.

Look at the 8800GTS in my specs. The memory just barely made it to 1100MHz, and it won't go any higher, and I am one of the lucky ones. Most don't make it to 1100MHz.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones .

I set my clocks to match that of a GTX and everything has been running fine for 2 days now. Have played quite a few diff games including Crysis .

I can set my card to run at what it does stock easy, I just want to be able to over clock it as high as the 9800gtx that's all. I just figured with all this talk about how it is a 8800gts 512 v 3.0 that maybe the voltage was different and that was it.

Now I see.

That's just not going to happen. The core clocks are on thing but the mem wall is just too great. My gts hits the wall at 837/2012/2052 & that was with a 120mm TT fan blowing right on a makeshift copper heatsink & copper ramsinks. That was w/o a voltmod. Trying to voltmod over that kind of performance would just kill the thing. The gtx I was playing with for the last few days did 860/2040/2400 out of the box & ate the OC'd gts alive & matched the stock GX2.

+1 ;)

The 8800 GTS 512 may be O/C at 9800GTX clocks but ... the 9800GTX can go far away for only 10€ ( 15$ i think ) more !!!
