VIA Eden One Watt Processor Brings Power-Efficiency to Fujitsu Thin Clients

    VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator of power efficient x86 processor platforms, today announced the adoption of its VIA Eden processor in the latest FUTRO thin client series from Fujitsu. The 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor, with its remarkably low TDP of only one watt, powers the Fujitsu FUTRO S100, an entirely fanless and silent thin client and virtual workplace solution.

    With a dramatically lower TCO, a reduced environmental footprint and a radically improved security infrastructure, it's no surprise to see thin client adoption continue to expand, particularly in enterprise and commercial corporate segments. Fujitsu's new range of FUTRO thin client products bring these benefits into sharper focus, with the FUTRO S100 thin client consuming less than eleven watts for the complete system under full load.

    The "One Watt" 500MHz VIA Eden ULV Processor
    The 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor has been designed from the ground up to meet the low power requirements of a wide range of industrial, commercial and ultra mobile applications including the latest client and virtual workplace solutions.

    Based on the VIA CoolStream Architecture, the 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor is capable of speeds of up to 500MHz while maintaining a remarkably low power consumption of only 1 watt peak power and as low as 100mW (0.1 watt) idle power. Integrated into the processor is the VIA StepAhead Technology Suite, which boasts an extensive array of performance-enhancing features ensuring the processor's low power consumption doesn't come at the expense of performance.     How does this compare to the processors that we find in mobile smartphones? 500MHz is pretty fast compared to some of the speeds I've seen, but I'm sure there are architectural differences that make this potentially better.

    VIA can make low power cpu but with everything else they suck.

    Good for windows xp. i dont want to see the performace of that cpu on Vista.

    They don't make "high-power" CPUs, so they don't suck at everything else.

    What is the target of this chip? This appears pitifully slow, even for internet-only pcs, although the one watt is impressive. If they can scale it to 2w at 1GHz it would be better

    The main difference I see is that Smartphones use ARM CPUs, whereas this is a fully x86 compatible CPU. x86 is generally more power hungry than ARM.

    IMO they should replace the Eden with a scaled down Nano running at 500 MHz, instead of using the C7 arch for it...

    this would be nice in place of the 400mhz P2 that was in the thin clients at my old school. They weren't really that slow they just ran really hot.

    +10 Im prety excited abut via in general right now. They seem to have come ut of no where literaly like hibernation to some prety awsome stuff (for its catagory) me = like

    hahahaha quick benchies : 2.8wats/1.6ghz/dryice/Crysis:MaxSettings/BSOD/MineSweeper 130FPS. Ill do more testing later lol

    yep, they been in the news alot with them too. Anxious to see how high they go with that next year. With all of intel and Amd Anouncments im sure they will have a good one to, cause they seem to be working hard. (Atleast way harder then they were)

    the c7(what this is based on) is faster then the p2, but not as fast as the p3, the c7 isnt a bad chip, this would be nice to see come out in some PMP's.

    According to the chart on their website, the 1Ghz model comes in at 3.5W, with the high-end 1.5Ghz model at 7.5W. Interesting that Fujitsu would choose to launch with the 500Mhz SKU. I suspect it's either to push their 1W "green" marketing agenda or simply because VIA can't churn out the high-clocking ULV chips in the capacities necessary for large-scale consumption.

    Btw, did anyone else notice that these are 90nm chips? VIA needs to go ahead and sell out to AMD/Intel so they can get some R&D funding and build these chips on a better process.

    Just because Fiat doesn't make a car that competes with a Porsche, doesn't mean it sucks at making cars or fast-cars to be specific. They don't make any fast-cars to suck in the first place.

    I just wish VIA would get the Nano out and about a bit more, Atom seems to have taken over already, maybe that's just Intel's marketing push. But why can't I buy a nano-ITX board with a Nano processor?
