the 8800gt is a better card but also costs more and its stock cooler is not so hot, or is it :p. well the 3870 has proved itself at its price point and he should be able to overclock it well with the stock cooler.. maybe add some AS5 to it.

Here's a mini bench for the 512mb 3850.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?p=2530751

200$, and the extra memory makes it look a lot more like the 3870. A 256mb version was used in the TPU review, I'd imagine x2 memory would mark up the $/performance at least 4%.

That'd be my vote.

Have a nice day :)

I thanked you for free. I missed the shot at the right button. :D Don't care it's for you.
The 3870 is a waste of money and only an ATI fanboy would buy one.

Go read this review, carefully.

The 3870 is a piece of crap in all aspects. It's only advantage is slightly lower power draw, but thats not nearly enough to make up for being 20% slower per dollar than the 8800GT.

And the kicker, even though the 3870 has lower power draw, it's 17% slower per watt. Less efficient architecture!

You are right there. Except for it's crap. I would just had said that more politely, so that fanboys don't feel offended. :D

hmm i thought it was doing well....thanks wazzle :toast:

Hmm wazzledoozle the advantage of being in power. :p
I've been saying the same (except 3870 is crap) for too long and have been attacked by fanboys for that.

The price thing makes little difference. If you can afford $200+ for a video card, you can scratch up the $30 or so additional for a 8800GT over a 3870 and get more FPS for your dollar.

I forgot to say my opinion on the topic. I voted 8800GT 1024 because it's the one there, but get a 512MB one if the price difference is not smaller than 15$. Today those extra MB don't even make any difference.

I'd imagine a large amount of people beg to differ. "The price thing" when it comes to cards that are so closely matched, will almost always make a difference as to whether or not a sale is made. Why spend the extra 30-80$ when you can get marginally less performance for less cost.

The price thing is important. I am a cheap bastard, and will settle for less than absolute.:D

The 3870 is a waste of money and only an ATI fanboy would buy one.

Maybe that's true in the 3870 vs 8800gt. But most people are really attracted by the 3870 compared to 8800gt because of it's lower power consumption, cheaper price tag and DirectX 10.1 and pcie 2.0 support. But I think that's still not enough to cover the fact that most games are "Optimized by Nvidia" and the 3870 also suffers from massive performance drop if AA is enabled just like the rest of the ATI family. The only thing that is the same about these cards are that they both can achieve good overclocks. (Even with newer driver from ATI, the 3870 will not surpass 8800gt because obviously Nvidia releases newer optimized drivers too)
For the moment, ATI has the cheaper card, But Nvidia has the better card.

" Crisys is a joke, it's NOT a DX-10 game at all.
It's pure DX-9..
To get the hi-res options in XP, just patch it and you have them.
Crisys is the FRAUD of the century in gaming experience.

The point of even buying Vista again?
Yep, nothing...just leave the junk OS alone, XP is twice as fast as everybody knows for a long time now.
M$ screwed up big time :)"

I recommend wait and see. Buy neither cards and see if any price drops would happen with 3870 or 8800gt

20% isn't marginal. You're getting 80% less performance for 88% of the price (250 vs 283, newegg right now.)

And after Xmas once prices drop to MSRP, we're talking about $230 vs $250. 92% of the cost for 80% of the performance.

Ah, but I was talking about a 3850 512mb vs a 3870.

200 vs 250, marginal differences.

Well with the ridiculous markup on PC hardware in the UK, Dell might be a good alternative to custom-building.

It's certainly not that way in the US.

Manually adjust fan speed to 100% = no overheating.

The newer ones come with a larger fan, but that's a gamble.

My 8800GT comes tomorrow. I'm immediately replacing the cheap TIM with MX-2, and increase the fan speed with Rivatuner. That should take care of any heat issues.
