Vista is ready to roll

Paul Thurrott, a Microsoft fan, wrote in a WinInfo update that Windows Vista would be hitting RTM (release to manufacturing) status today, a full two days earlier than anticipated.

My sources at the software giant confirmed this weekend that Microsoft is set to finalize Windows Vista as early as Monday and release the product to manufacturing. The final build number is expected to be 6000.16386.061101-2205, I'm told.

Windows Vista may have been finalized earlier - some sources say as soon as last Friday - but bugs that needed fixing, as well as an unexpected power outage Friday evening prevented the Windows team from creating a final build that night.

Probably more than a few, but that's what it's ALL about - patches & such for the massive software & hardware mixture that MS' testing labs & folks who ran the beta didn't turn up!

Driver support will PROBABLY be yet another, because of MS' new stance on allowing 3rd party OEM's access to the system @ THAT level, unless they certify thru on the driver via MS... takes time & all that!

* I have a feeling it's going to be widely adopted (even if only eventually, & mostly by new PC purchasers) mostly by end-users rather than business environs!

(For obvious reasons (like turning a whole operation "upside-down" for a new OS in a business in workstations alone isn't easy & maybe NOT that wise, especially w/ "in-house" applications written by the MIS/IS/IT team coders in said organizations))...
