I've downloaded the file and all. It came down as a RAR though, not an ISO... oh well.

Anyway, when burning this to a DVD, should I burn it as Joliet, ISO Level 1 or ISO Level 2?
Oh, I'm using CD Burner XP Pro.

EDIT: Never mind, I downloaded Nero 7 Express, which seems to do this automatically.

EDIT2: Right... the DVD was burned allright, but I can't boot with it? How do I burn a bootable DVD?

Try burning a iso file. Maybe it would then.
When you extract the rar files do you see the windows setup and a couple of other files.
If above don't work try to make a Ner burning image of the files and then burn the image.

Right, I've got an image file now, the RAR just... turned into one suddenly.

Now I'm trying to use Nero Burning ROM, not the Express version. I pick DVD-ROM(ISO) and then pick the image file I have. It says it is too large for the ISO filesystem and I must use UDF. I don't want to waste another DVD, so... gah, should I burn it in UDF?

Double click on the nero image file. Then it will redirect you to the the burning section and the just burn the image. It will convert to the windows files.

Done that now. It worked. But it seems Vista cannot be installed on an external HDD. Shit. I really don't want to overwrite the stuff I've got on this HDD.

You don't have to overwrite. you can keep your files if you do upgrade instead of a clean install.
Just make a backup on the external hd. And do a clean install of Vista
