I don't know why or how WASD ever became popular. Duke Nukem 3D was probably the first to popularize Mouse + Keyboard. At first, everyone would use keyboard only for strafing and turning. Then the word got out on Kali about a new control scheme that PWNs everyone...

EDSF. EDSF is much better than WASD because it keeps your hand on the home row. You crouch using A rather than jacking your pinky down to CTRL. It's annoying to have to change button configurations beacuse the inferior WASD was adopted as the standard.

If you don't already use EDSF, you absolutely should. We need to popularize EDSF and make it the standard so I don't have to change button mapping anymore.

WASD FTL!!!!!!!!!!!

meh - num pad controls all the way.

Go play Thief I and Thief II when you need all the lean/walk/run/use/crouch/jump/strafe/etc controls side by side.

I want to get a keyboard that has the numpad on the left instead of the right, but I keep procrastinating

I used to use mouse + kb... mouse2 was forward, , was strafe left, . was strafe right. Then I played Gunz for a while which wouldn't allow the previous config, and got used to wasd... and realized how truly superior wasd was. I've been using it for years and gotten used to it.

If you must use a keyboard, the right side arrows with the Inser/Home/Page/Del/End keys + numberpad is a lot less convulted. Greater room for error.

Or..you could get 'current' and serious about gaming and use a stand alone board/pad.

I could never go back to playing with a keyboard,...ever.

Sorry but ESDF is just strange. Using CTRL for crouch feels entirely natural to me.

I have one of those stand-alone pads (Saitek Control Pad - or whatever it's called) and I love it, but at the same time I love the Eclipse (which I also have) so it's a toss up as to which I use, and as I haven't downloaded the 64bit drivers for it I'm using the Eclipse lol.

Ppl say that EDSF feels wierd... if that's the case, then it must feel wierd when typing e-mails since the 'A' key is one of the most frequently used letters. Unless you type by pecking.

I used to play with the arrow keys... but got sick of changing control schemes in every game... so I switched to WASD and i'm happy with it

Ctrl for crouch is sooooo standard :D and shift for either sprint or jump if there is no sprint.

WASD just feels right for me. I use CTRL for crouching, ALT to lie down and shift to run/walk. I can't stand using c for crouch though, it feels weird. ESDF makes me curl my fingers too much, that'll probably get tiring after a while. And the way my keyboard curves just makes it so much worse.

madCow, what are you talking about "EDSF makes me curl my figers too much"? It's the exact same as WASD but you don't have to CURL your pinky to reach the CTRL key.

I actually first started using ESDF since your hand is more towards the middle of the board and has access to more keys. However, I switched to WASD later on since it was the default in pretty much every game and I didn't feel like changing the settings all the time :p

I used Shift for crouch though, CTRL feels a bit too far down.

Even the most skilled typist does not use their pinky to type. My third finger is resting on the A key at all times. Which is exactly where it would be for gaming.

That's one of my enjoyments when at a LAN party when I'm not actually playing. Is walking around studying other people's layouts. And up until the last couple of years, it was amazing how many used not only WASD, but as Nova mentioned, default game key mapping.

If I could have gone forward in time and brought back some of today's USB peripherals, those guys woulda been sick insane ..wow.

I'm still on the lookout for a good emulator or program that gets games like Duke3d working properly, and online. Because Old schoolers used Joysticks, New schoolers used keys/mouse and I don't know what we'd call someone with a stand alone pad and a Deathadder, but 'holy crap' would be good enough.

I hate games with a passion that come setup like that. I think you are one of the few that uses them.

I hate using left-ctrl to do anything.

When I'm not utterly lazy, I use WSAD/mouse to move, left shift is crouch/position down, E is action, R is reload, F is melee, G is grenade, Q is switch weapon, Z is scope, X is flashlight, space is jump/position up, and Tab is objectives/map.

Otherwise, I don't really mind moving my fingers in different positions.

I have gotten used to using the numbers as weapons.

And G and H for hot keys for grenades and smoke bombs.

Quake Wars is killing me on scroll for weapons as some will have a zoom mode.....it throws me off.
