isnt it the 6.8 or 6.9?(at least for for x1900 series) up until then it was warcat or omega i think..

these are only speculations, but I have read in various threads that the 6.8 catalyst was the best driver form ATi to date...

Please flame the poster above me if I'm wrong :p

made the same experience... i ´ve been using now ATI cards only since Catalyst 4.10 and till now i think Catalyst 6.8 performs best.

In 3dmark 05 the 6.8 is about 80 points better than 6.9 on my X1900GT

80 points cant truly be considered a difference can it? I get 50-150 points difference each time I run the test. (depends on programs running, P2P programs ETC
you should run the test atleast 3 times on each driver and find the average of both to be sure..
next time, maybe it's 80 points above.. :p

it ran several times under same conditions ;)

Difference between the tests on same driver was about 10 points... took the average and compared it.

The best is always the latest drivers as they fix problems every release with games and increase speeds. Now the real question I would say is; "what is the best driver for radeon xxxx model?". That is a harder question. But I still would answer with "latest driver possible".
