Come tax time, I may upgrade my media server with 1. an SSD and 2. a larger hard drive. I see these types of SSD as the cheapest. I don't need to spend a lot of money for storage (I realize this is 24GB, that will be ample space) or massive speeds (even this should be many times faster than the aging hard disk). Could I simply plug in the power and SATA cables onto this thing and let it go? It's not going to be moving at all, so if it can work just sitting there it'll be fine.

Well hell, the cost of the adapter would probably push me over what it would cost to just get a regular SSD. Kind of silly I suppose, trying to use weird drives to save a couple bucks... oh well.

How's this look?
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=34691747

The SSD and HDD are for Dragonfly, my media server. I'm doubling the storage space, and adding an SSD to boot off of. It'll hold Windows, and not much else (some very few programs that don't take much space at all). A nice tube of MX-4 to have around, and the Icy Dock thing is for another computer that has an SSD already, but I plan to add a 2.5" HDD to it (because we already have one, and he needs more space). It'll hold all that plus the 3.5" HDD he has, all neatly into a single 5.25 bay.

I do a lot of DVD ripping, which, in my process, means lots of massive intermediate files, on the order of 7GB per episode. I may be moving around in excess of 200GB at a time, which is slow with the drive I'm currently using. I'll probably take the 500GB drive that's in my media server already, move it in my main PC and use it as a temporary work drive.

Well, it's not going to do any better than the 60GB drive. I am sure I'll never come close to filling even the 60GB drive, anyway.

Oh, how many threads I've seen with people saying "I made my C drive small because I didn't think I'd need anything more and now I need to enlarge it because I ran out of room"... :D

I really can't see that happening. What could I possibly put on the main system drive of a computer that sits 'headless' (that is, no mouse, keyboard, monitor, only connected to power and ethernet), whose primary function is to function as a media server and run WCG with spare resources? Even on my main computer which I actually use I'm only using 16.4GB of drive C. I'm considering editing the partition to keep one small partition for windows and have another to store a few games or something on separately... but still I don't see how I'm gonna fill up C.

Well, it would be something you could use after the fact. It is also completely compatible with what you are using now.

We have M2 sata in our new lenovos. We installed a 128GB SSD in those and kept the 1TB for storage drive.
