I want something which fills the 5770-5850 gap, and with a better price/perf than 5830.

Isn't the GTX 460 filling that gap?

I'm hoping for nVidia to release the beast. The beast that will piss on the 5970 and the Ares "5870X2"

Yes, but chances are its going to have a worse price/perf compared to the 5830. Or wait for Asus to come out with something like "Poseidon" with watercooled 2xGTX480 and 4 8pin connnectors

That will be pretty cool but it will just be equal or about 5% better than the ARES. I want two OCed GTX 485s in one dual-gpu card.

Nah, its going to be much better. Remember that SLI scales much better than Xfire, and according to w1z's chart GTX480 is about 80% compared to ARES, so with 2 GTX480 we will be seeing performances of about 30-40% more powerful than ARES. And we will not have any arguments about "Will it run Crysis?"

Good find. 0.8x2x0.78 =1.248 about 25% more powerful then, consuming about 50% more juice. Not too bad, IMHO.

Sure thing. :)

The weird part is that 5870 Tri-Fire scales really well.

yes ares is nothing compared to 2x480 in sli SLI kicks ass always because is evolved and nvidia work hard and alot on drivers than Ati they just make new gpu's instead make better drivers...

Wouldn't say "nothing compared to"
Read my post below Fourstaff's post.

The Ares power consumption is 436W when a normal 5870 takes about 212W. Imagine the 2x480 dual-gpu card power consumption. Single GTX 480 max power consumption is 320W so two of them will be about 640W-650W. :twitch:

It doesn't work that way for Nvidia. Not at all.

According to Wizzard's latest review:
GTX275 consumes 220w and the GTX295 which is 2xGTX275 consumes 320w.
The 4870 consumes 206w while the X2 consumes 381w.
5850 150w -> 5970 304w.

And it was the same with 9800GTX and 9800GX2. 150w and 197w respectively iirc.

EDIT: and of course 5870 212w -> ARES 436w

As you can see Nvidia's dual GPU cards have never consumed twice as much and that's what makes more sense to me actually. It makes much more sense than the dual cards consuming twice because many components don't have to be replicated.

To say that SLi always scales better than CrossFire is a little unfair.
For this generation, SLi scales better indeed.. check the benchies on reviews..

I've seen some 5770 crossfire reviews that show near linear scaling on those cards. Hard to get better than that. Of course each system setup is going to have its own variables.

GeForce GTX 460. The GeForce 8800 GT of this generation.

The 8800GT was somewhat a 8800GTX, so to be a 8800GT this should be a GTX 475 with 50% heat and power from a 470

To me the 460 would be a 8800gts 320, but that is pushing it even

Also, panda, i don't think that's it. Maybe some new tech like optimus for desktops (would be AWESOME) A GT240 for desktopping and with a button SLId 480s.

And maybe that's what it is somewhat. Remember that the GTX460 is suposed to be a cut down GF104. Maybe the countdown is because they are launching the full GF104 on the 12th too (soft/paper launch). Maybe the so called 1GB GTX460 is not a 460 with just more ram, maybe it's a "GTX475" with the full 384 SPs and 256bit memory interface. At the rumored 150W TDP that would be a nice next 8800 GT/GTS 512 in my book.

Excited to see what the TDP is going to be. If its low then I might ditch my 5770 for it.

WTH is this only in UK page?

Well the GTX 295 is two underclocked GTX275s. So of course it wont be exactly double the power. While the ARES is two stock 5870s.

I'm not saying that if two GTX 480s were put together they will exactly take about 640W. So far the GTX 480 takes too much power for the performance it offers IMO. So all I'm saying is that it might be the same issue with nVidias dual-gpu card.

Yeah and all I'm saying that the probability of that happening is very low. Ati results cannot be extrapolated to Nvidia, because when it comes to multi-GPU, Nvidia is quite better: they somehow manage a better power consumption, relative to single GPU consumption of course and performance usually scales better even when underclocked.

It really does tell how much Nvidia cares about GPGPU, because if they followed the same tactic (smaller chips and X2 for high-end, especially on the ROP/memory bitrate side) as Ati they would completely own considering how superior their multi-GPU cards are in comparison to how their single-GPUs do.

The GTX295 clock is like 8% lower but consumption is 40% lower than 2x times a GTX275.

You can never say, i had quite a lot of high expectations for the GTX 480.

You can't say that nVidia scales better. 3x 5870s scale better than 3x GTX 480s.
The ARES is basically two 5870s pushed into one card. If nVidia did put two stock 480s in one card, its expected to have a 600W+ power consumption.

And trust me, I'm no ATi fanboy... I owned a GTX 295 before the 5xxx series and im hoping to switch back to nVidia if they release a powerful card within my expectations.

EDIT:
The GTX295 clock is like 8% lower but consumption is 40% lower than 2x times a GTX275.

Thats true but now graphic cards are in a whole other level. Its not easy to reduce power consumption so much like back then.
