What's up with Steam lately?

Oh, wait a minute, pretty sure download servers are separate from friends/store. Friends I think are all at Valve (Washington) and the store probably are too. I haven't had any problems downloading games for the most part; the problems are the other services.

I'm off the Seattle server and have not had any of these issues mentioned.

Bah! I hate to admit it but what you are describing is happening to me right now. Fail.

Note: When i click the link for "networking support tips" the page times out!!!! 502 bad gateway.

How does one go about changing which server they connect to?

no problems logging in or losing connection, but browsing the steam website(like the store and community) is slow as hell

I'm, at work right now (unfortunately have to do overtime), so I don't remember exactly, but if you open up your settings, I think it's on the first or second tab of the settings. There is a drop down box.

Last night I lost all connection to Steam at around 1030PM GMT. It never regained connection until this morning, but it wasn't my internet or ISP DNS because literally every site I checked worked! And I wanted to get some more game time in the new Betrayer

For me I usually get the message about unable to connect to Steam when I prioritize my torrent duties for some time... but most of the time when I just surf the Net, it's okay. Most probably due to regional settings... I tried Singapore & few other countries as preferred download servers. To my surprise, all are in the green. So it's either due to network traffic, topology or the place you're staying. ISP & Steam services could be also part of the reason why you can't establish a connection to them...

I was playing Civ V last night and I ran into some steam issues early on. Everything should be up to status quo by now. Steam typically only goes down for me around the 7 o clock hour which I assume that's when everyone is logging in after a long day at work. Could be wrong though...

FYI, if Steam is being stupid, I discovered Steam has a CDN mirror. Just drop Akamai between store and steampowered. e.g. http://store.akamai.steampowered.com

That will work even when the store is down.
