Any member is free to write a review or guide and post it in the appropriate section. That has always been the way TPU works. We are always glad to see people contributing.
Assistant mods would do what?
Maybe like 'Editors' that OCN has. Give it to frequently online members with high level of knowledge, experience, and whatnot in respective areas.
I can think of a couple people who would make good WCG Editors in that regard.
My point is not that we don't have the ability, its that a tool that promotes this behavior from members would be beneficial in the long run.
let me interject if i may. a lot of TPUers, myself included, have been members for a long time. we are old now and have lost that drive to contribute. just part of growing up really. tpu is full of older members and our age scares away a lot of the youngins' because we don't tolerate trolls (except for mailman.) so the young guys find other forums and contribute there. just my theory.
I actually couldn't agree more!
I think that is very true, ER. Can't let TPU just age and die out (little reminiscent of the aging population problems seen in parts of the world now), so a way to get younger more 'driven' members in here is an even more important thing, no?
Personally, I'm quite glad that TPU isn't like OCN. Since I started coming here, I found TPU to be a more mature forum then most other places.
Let's make it 100% clear that I do not, and have not stated, that I want that. Just don't want there to be any confusion. I may take examples from there, but thats it.
Perhaps some sort of position(s) at TPU that can coordinate things like contests, competitions and things like that? That, I think is a good idea.
Exactly, that is something I think would be great for the site and is something I would be interested in doing (time permitting).
Didn't we at one point have a social media position? I dont mess with Facebook or Twitter, but I havent heard much about what happened with that. I think that is something a couple Social Media Savvy members could take up the mantle on, too.
What tools do you need other than the editor? People write guides and reviews all the time in sections. No one is stopping anyone from writing a personal review or guide on this forum.
No offense ER, but the level of toleration on TPU far surpasses any forum on which I've been a member.
When W1zz puts up a review and people complain, they don't get banned or infracted like many other forums where you can't disparage them.
When a news article goes up and people don't agree with what is being said, they don't get banned or infracted for disagreeing with the news posters point of view.
New members just need to learn the rules of simple ettiquette and not be total asshats, and they will not be hammered on for voicing an opinion.
Yes, there are people on TPU who beat up on new people, but it's not the mods. That is a problem with the community. As a mod I try to squash that as soon as I can in my sections.
I find it pathetic when someone asks a question and a long time members say something like "Why didnt' you google that?". If we can't help people with questions other than saying "gooogle it" then this site becomes worthless. Thankfully there are many members who have the same attitude.
Just my 2 cents.
Kreij, I don't think you understand what I am saying. I know anyone can post a review or guide and that the tools to do so are there. I am saying that using the possibilty of mod/editor promotions is a good tool to help enduce and facilitate people's willingness or drive to actual create them.
I agree with what you are saying; however, this is from the forum guidelines by DAN:
I do give answers, but... I still post that google link, especially, if they post they looked and couldn't find anything. I figure they needed assistance in the endeavor.
But, over all, I think the chosen ones are great at what they do and have a very mature and balanced mindset when it comes to decisions.
Yes, I agree, especially with your first paragraph. The amount of flack I took for some of my news stories was incredible for example, but the mods never got unduly heavy, which I think is a credit to the ethos here and why I'm still around as a regular member.
I personal don't like that rule to Google first, because where do your Google results come from? Forums like TPU, that's why I think people should always ask first so when someone does Google that same question it sends a link to TPU.
I really liked all of your news posts, I read yours more often because it was fun, not dull like most stuff.
yeah, definitely want to do more with guides, but seems hard to find people that can put out quality content.
any ideas who could take over that role? i'm sure tons of manufacturers would be interested in chipping in. just need someone motivated who can take care of these things and plan+coordinate
I'd be more than willing to help coordinate contests, I feel thats close to what I've been doing a little with my giveaways. Feel free to PM me.
Thanks man, appreciate it.
He will correct me if I am wong, but I think W1zz is always on the lookout for people who want to contribute to the site and possess the necessary skills, have a good mindset and are committed.
(ie, News people, reviewers, article/guide writers, database upkeep/cleaning, etc.)
Moderation is a little different as there is only a need for a certain number of moderators and the overall moderation group needs to be geographically diverse so there is reasonable coverage at almost anytime of the day.
always. if you want to contribute i'm sure we can find something for you
What ever happened to the TPU wiki?
I think theonedub does an excellent job with the contest he does. He wold be great for this role and strongly has my vote if it matters.
gone due to lack of interest and more spammers than readers
idk, I joined TPU when I was 16, and I found my immatureness then, to not bother anyone
W1zz, I think one reason guides are not written much are because they don't get stickied much etc. Maybe make a section or sub-section for guides?
"Refreshing mods" would be a terrible idea, one of the bad things about TPU members is that they don't like all that change much. I think of qubit's articles a perfect example of that
