no it wont NV is releasing an in-between card below the 285 to combat the 4890 so the GTX285 sounds like it will still be faster to me.

From what I hear, if the 4xxx series wasn't lacking ROPs, it would be much better. From what I see, the 4890 is just an overclocked '70.

not just an oc'd 4870 but its a minor set of changes

In games like Fallout3 the 4870 1GB performs better however.

However in FPS like FarCry 2 the GTX285 outperforms the 4870.

Or you could run 2 4850 in CF on a X48 or X58 mobo, the sum of 2 4850 would only be around £230.

If you do a dual 4870 in CF on X48 or X58 then your looking at £350 which is the same as a 4870X2

However its also worth noting that although the drivers of the 4870X2 havesomewhat improved scince the cards release. Alot of games don't like the 4870 or the 4870X2 FarCry 2 being one of them if you're going to play that. (iwouldn't)

On Newegg however the 4870X2 is only 10 dollars more than the 285 no brainer really.

*blinks*...i had a toxic 3870, that i could play crysis with at ultra mode at 30-40fps...thats a 3870 either the gtx285 4870....4970....them cards are all equally if not minutly more powerfully then each other.....and....what are you gonna play soon ...2 copies of crysis at the same time...just get the cheapest one itll perform super.

Eh really, Not meaning to burst your bubble here matey. But the 4870 won't even get that framerate solid on crysis, you must of been running it at DX9 because, there no way you'd achive that framerate in DX10

Id wait to see how the Radeon 4890 will turn out in speed first before deciding.

I for sure an getting the 4890 then thats the last upgrade for a while, its not even the fact that its faster, I need the newest shit and from what ive heard once its released and if its anywhere near the 285 then there will be a 290 closely following it, the 4xxx series will never catch up

If your gonna continue to run that p4 cpu, I wouldn't bother upgrading. Your CPU will bottleneck either of those card so bad, you won't get any gains from the upgrade.

My fault man, I misunderstood you. Ok about getting the GTX285 or the 4870 1 gig. Personally I haven't used a 4870 myself, but I did have a GTX260, which is about equal in performance to the 1 gig 4870. Now currently I'm running a GTX280, which is just a hair under the GTX285 performance wise. From what I've seen performance wise with the cards I've had, $250 for a 4870 compared to $335 for a GTX285, I'd probably get a 4870 1 gig. Yes the GTX285 will be the better performing of the two, but is the gain worth a extra $85. Heh, probably not.

I do not think it is worth holding off, and I do not think it will be lessened by far either. It might match or slightly beat the 285 but then the next gen GTX will be soon to come

yah i play fallout, all the crysis', far cry blahblahblah... on uber-high or whatever with my 4870 and im perfectly satisfied, put the money you save by getting the 4870 into a new mobo or CPU
