Honestly? Have you even priced out a new SATA drive? They are so cheap, with buying that convertor plus shipping you could probably almost afford a new SATA drive.

Does this work with hardrives only or also other ide devices like my dvd writer. I ask because I already have a similar thing but it doesn't work but I think it cause the one I have works with HDs only.

This, their literally $20 new, cheaper if you catch one on sale. I'd rather have no DVD drive than use one of those ugly and janky adapters.

I concur with the concensus: new drive for ~$20. Don't waste your time on a converter. Either keep that DVD drive for an old computer or recycle it.

The reason is quite simple: in order to fully support IDE, the SATA converter needs to support a port multiplier. If the controller it is plugged into doesn't support port multipliers (a lot don't), the IDE converter won't work. A converter is also another potential point of failure in the system.

If you absolutely cannot spend $20 on a new DVD writer, it might be better to look for an IDE add-in card to add a IDE port to the system. Something like this or this. I would still recommend buying a SATA DVD writer over this option though because again, more headaches.

i would consider buying a new sata writer. they cost very little. i got one from asus ages ago and it has outlasted all its competitors.
also i would like to mention that converters like these often dont work 100% perfect.

That's why burning software has "buffer overflow protection." It preloads the data to the RAM and then copies it from the RAM to the device buffer.

24 x 1.385 MB/s = 33.24 MB/s

Pretty much any hard drive that was bought in the last decade can handle that so it isn't really any issue.

I burn at minimum speed (usually 2.4x to 4x) to maximize the odds of a good burn. 4x is about the same speed as a 52x CD.

I'm a sucker for Lite-Ons.

hmm i used to burn at slow speed, but i burned at max speed and even that drive has lasted over 5 years. so i doubt it makes any difference

Just saying you're more likely to get a coaster at maximum speed as opposed to the slowest. If the disks and burner are both rated for 24x, odds are it will work fine at 24x.

on most SATA to IDE adapters (IDE on Drive SATA on Mobo) The Jumper has to be changed otherwise it will slow the machine down.

You mean it is never going to have buffer underrun. Large buffers on optical drives were important years ago, partly because of the IDE specification itself, but they don't matter now.

1.) If the drive was in PIO mode, the buffer was extremely important. SATA drives don't go into PIO mode.
2.) Hard Drives in the old days were slow. They were even slower if they were on a IDE change with 2 drives. Modern SATA hard drives, and even USB drives, are way faster than the optical drive could ever burn.
3.) Most burning software use a very large RAM buffer that is way way faster than the optical drive can burn. So even if the drive containing the data you are burning is super slow, the data is loaded into RAM before it is burnt anyway, so it doesn't matter. Old computers didn't have enough RAM to do this, any modern computer does.

That is why modern optical drives don't need big buffers. For example, IMGBurn has a 80MB buffer in RAM, and you can increase it to 1GB if you want. You never have a buffer underrun with that size of buffer.

It is also often times harder to read a disc burnt at faster speeds. I've seen more than a few optical drives that wouldn't read discs burnt at full speed, but if you burn them at 4x or 8x they read fine.

Just recycle the old drive and buy a new SATA device if you really want it.

I have a BD drive in my machine, just in case, but i havent used it more than once in the last 2-2½ years. Otherwise just buy an external drive using USB and youre good to go, you wont be using it a lot anyway, its simply to slow and outdated today.

I used mine for the first time burning win 10 the other day, thats all. I still have 4 discs laft and with this speed it might take me another 4-5 years before they are used lol.

Go to Newegg and get free shipping with the LG shown before. Ignore the cache, optical media is small in comparison to HDDs and SATA is fast enough to avoid needing a huge buffer. This drive should cost you 20 dollars after shipping.

I have an ASUS one that's almost exactly the same and it works fine. Just upgrading to SATA drives would be quite the improvement because IDE is bulky and slow.

IDE is dead (relies on a legacy controller many motherboards now exclude). SATA drives still have use in current/future systems.

External drives (especially ones that house a 5.25" drive which I highly recommend) are quite expensive. If you only burn a disk once a blue moon, it might be a better investment to get a USB/eSATA external burner over an internal. I've used my external a lot more than I expected.

grab a USB enclosure for the DVD drive or just buy a cheap USB dvd drive and never use an internal one again.
