I'm not sure but it might be worth checking out this: AMD launched its Radeon HD 3600 and 3400 graphics processors today, but it'll take another month for Nvidia to launch its own next-gen mainstream product, according to a story on Expreview. Recent rumors suggested the GeForce 9600 GT was scheduled for a launch on February 14, but Expreview now says the card has been pushed back until February 21.

The new mid-range cards will probably outperform the 2 you listed for a similar price.

Well, I'm not an expert, but if you look at the clock speed it would seem to be the ATI. However, someone explained to me how ATIs are inferior because of how they transfer information. I also know you can OC Geforces really well. So...

They're about on par, I'd go for the 8600GT

I'd agree, but, again, I'm not an expert.

They are on the same level, both cards have there advantages and disadvantages on each other. But in most games the 8600GT wins by slightly. However both cards are extremely weak and barely meet the exceptable minimum requirement from games today. Spend a little more on the ATI 3850 it's more than double as fast and will last longer, they are £95 on ebuyer.com with free delivery

I would second that motion. Or go with an 8800GT, depends on what you do.

I agree with all that has been said, the 2 cards are pretty evenly matched.....however (there is always a but! :)) with the 2 links provided, the XT is a 256MB card, the GT is a 512MB card so the 8600GT for me is the clear winner and recommendation IMO.

The HD3850 is without doubt the better bet but it's a bit more expensive, but again, IMO, money well spent and you will be delighted with your extra few quid! If you want to play DX10 games, IMO 512MB is a must but in any guise, neither the 2600XT or the 8600GT cut it very well, having said that, the GT is easily moddible and overclocks like a monster so if money is really tight, a little bit of research and patience and you could have a reasonable card at least.

2600 xt is better until you turn on aa/af and the 8600gt oc's better so imo the 8600gt is better
