Which Processor?

I have a ASUS P5Q Pro motherboard on the way. and i need something to put in it. Which would be the better bet?

imho i would go with the q6600 it's a tried and true chip... i've never been a fan of xeon stuff. i would also say if you didn't have that board coming to wait and see what the amd side had in store coming in early jan it looks like. the new phenomII's are supposed to be pretty decent and not too much more expensive.

i have an am2 setup. and ive lost interest in amd for now. mobo is alrdy paid for and soon to be on its way.

ive noticed many "builds" or upcoming builds. or reviews from the past week or 2 where people have gone with a dual core processor instead of a quad. even though the price is less than a $40 difference. why might this be?

May be tried and true, but it is near being outdated. I suggest you get something more futureproof. Either a q9450 or better.

Depends I'm not an Intel guy but if you have the cash q6600 is a reasonable option. Partly this is due to I believe the price and performance of quads all together.
and the fact that most duals are renamed quads or I would say disabled quads but not sure about the architecture.

but q6600 does pretty well and its the same as phenom 9850BE

I dont need the newest best equipment. Im moving to a quad core system. its faster than my X2 5400. and a cost effective upgrade. Thank you for your concern. However i have a motherboard, i have a budget, and would appreciate it if everyone wouldnt try and distract me, or alter my mind set. I do understand yalls concern for me to buy the right thing. but ive done my research.

I would go for the Q6600. Although the Xeon is an LGA775, it's suppose to be more compatible with server mobos/rigs.

I would guess that both chips are the same. Like there are identical Xeons in dual core lineup. I think that Xeons are selected CPU with lower VID. But I would go for not any Q6600 look for Q6600 SLACR G0 stepping it overclocks 3.6 at average. It would not suprise me if that Xenon does the same.

I've had both of these chips, and currently run the x3220 in my rig. Here are the differences: The x3220 will clock higher on lower vcore. For instance, I can clock 3.3ghz on 1.28v, and maybe lower, but my board won't go lower than stock vcore. The chip also stays cooler than the Q6600 on higher vcore too. I can clock 3.85ghz on 1.52v, and never reach more than 62c on any of the cores.
Like I said Xeons are selected CPUs you can only go wrong if you get Xeon older stepping and compared it to Q6600 new stepping. If you compare Q6600 with Xeon with same stepping Xeon could be you better bet.

Q6600

Take a hard look at the Intel Q6600, GO stepping chips only though. I have one on ASUS P5Q MB with a Thermalright SI-128 heatsink (low 30's at stock speeds), it will game hard or run heavy software applications (both at the same time) and leave you wanting for nothing more.

missing the point, 3220 is better, that is only 5 time winner because users dont realize that it is an equivelant product, and also dont realize they can use it on their LGA775. They go to newegg.com and search for core2duo, or Q6600, not xeon.

I'd go for the Xeon Q66 man. They are higher binned and usually OC higher.
