who makes the best sound cards

I really wanted the Asus Xonar back around X-mas but the cost, I think it was 189 on the egg, compared to the X-fi Titanium Pro was just way more than I could afford. I picked up the Titanium pro and I could actually tell a huge difference compared to the Xtreme Gamer Fatality I had previously. If you can afford the Asus Xonar series..go for it. But if not don't minus the X-fi Titanium, it's a pretty damn good sound card.

i had a Xtreme Gamer, had computability iusse wth my m2n sli mobo, so i returned it, the sound was great, but not mind blowing from onboard

My Auzentech X-Meridian is leagues above most of the newer X-Fi cards I sell at work, the audio quality is only second maybe to some of the newer cards by them like the Auzentech Prelude which is an X-Fi on steroids or the HT Omega Claro Halo XT which uses the same CMedia Oxygen HD chipset my X-Meridian uses only has a dedicated headphone amp to take things to the next level. Another thing is high end cards like my X-Meridian have replaceable op-amps to customize the analog output quality and tonality.

FYI to anyone using a card with the Oxygen HD chipset go download and use the HT Omega Claro drivers for it, much better than even the latest from CMedia.

For gaming though I think people are better off with Creative as X-Fi has the latest EAX but I know ASUS has dabbled in that area.

For music though I wouldn't bother with them.
