Why do Catalyst 4.7's seem better than all newer versions?

I keep coming back to Catalyst 4.7 drivers, before on the Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb card they seemed to run smoothest, and now on my new 9600XT they also seem to run smoothest. Better 2D performance, actually less disk thrashing when opening applications, etc. Haven't benched in 3D v4.7 vs v4.12, but in 2D the 4.7's definitely seem to work better. Obviously, based on the fixes in 4.12 and the new features and optimizations added since 4.7, the 4.12's should easily beat the 4.7's in 3D benching.

But I sure like the way windows responds in 2D w/ v4.7 than I do w/ v4.12. Actually, 4.9, 4.10 were as good in windows 2D, but got game lockups. It was in 4.11 that they added the 'fix' for memory allocation that was supposed to really help the 256mb cards, but I have to wonder since beginning with 4.11 windows 2D seems to bog down. I guess its a worthwhile trade off if the 3D is faster w/ 4.12... just seems weird.
