why does the asus pic up more ram up than the evga

Install windows on your machine...Check how much ram they get....Format and Reinstall them....Do you think they will use the same ram ? My guess is it has nothing to do with the motherboard, it just happens.

Do both boards have exactly the same onboard hardware?

Pagefile, Video memory, L1, L2, L3 cache, readyboost memorysticks, they all use memory addresses. Different bios's and different motherboards may address memory differently. Also motherboard specific drivers may differ in handling of addressed memory space.

The ASUS picks up 3.25GB because the GeForce 8800Ultra has 768MB (3/4 of a GB) so the OS takes that into the 4GB. Does the EVGA maybe have 512MB somewhere on board? Like an onboard flash drive?

Evga boards dont have memory mapping when the Asus does and it to do with how big the bois is to

The thing is that they could have patched windows to address more memory but then all of the drivers wouldn't work man. That's the problem, if you go up from 32 bit to let's say 36 bit the drivers don't work anymore...

and it would be a huge problem to do. PC's are binary, so it has to be a multiple of 2. 8/16/32/64/128 - you cant just throw an extra 8 bits onto 32 for 40, its a lot more efficient and simple to just double it. (thats why ram sticks do the same thing, and we dont have say, 96MB sticks of SD-ram or 768MB sticks of DDR)
