Okay so I purchased a GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2 Revision 2 and it has been a nothing short of a nightmare! At first the board seemed fine, and did exactly what I needed it to, and recognized all 14 of my Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB , then sudenly 1 day 2 of them disaperead and I could not make them recognize at all, I figured they might have died, but not only could I see them in the bios, I confirmed they were fine in another computer.
Okay I thought "I'll flash the bios it is 2 versions old after all" , go to the Gigabyte website, and downlaod the bios updater, and go to run it. Turns out in Gigabyte's infinate wisdom, they for some reason with their auto updater do not allow 64-Bit Windows 7 to execute the bios updates :twitch: WTF!? Well dammit, ugh, okay I'll do it manually, rather than go through the trouble of installing a 32 bit vesion. So after alot of cursing and angry words and empty threats at the computer I did manage to flash the bios. So I assumed "all is now right with the world again" not so fast.
So I fired up Fire Fox, and went to the tech support page and fired off a complaint/ help request. And got the world most incompitent person to reply to me in broken english (after 2 days!). Who attempted to inssist that I had to re-install windows again to make it work correctly again, "sorry, but I'm 100% shure it's a hardware issue" I stated back to them. I then got a reply reitterating the same thing, that nothing was wrong with the motherboard and it had to be Windows at fault ( I felt as though I was dealing with someone on the same intelligence plain as a knuckle dragger from Geek Squad) and that they could not help me until I re-installed Windows. Well it seemed as though the mobo had other plans, because it solved the argument for us and just up and died after about 1 1/2 months of use.
Now here is where the true nightmare begins! I got a card board box and some foam peanuts from the garage, and put the mobo and all the things it came with and went the website to prepare a sheet for RMA. Well come to find out the RMA page wasn't working I couldn't input text nor did any of the submit or date buttons work). So in desperation I fired off a help request.
" 11/17/2009 11:24
Question : I get this error on your RMA page
"
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Named Pipes]Access denied.

/DirectRMA/dbutil.asp, line 618
"
Also when I attempt to add a new RMA request, I do not get a submit button, nor can I input any text into into the name slot. your RMA page is broken! "

And I got this response:

" Dear customer,
We are sorry, our RMA web was down on pass couple days, please resubmit RMA request on this web:

http://rma.gigabyte-usa.com/DirectRMA/EndUser_Main.asp

Or contact our RMA dept at 626-854-9338 select option 4 , they will help to assign RMA."
Which was the most help I had gotten thus far in this adventure. Which is rather sad! So I then filled out the RMA form ( even after filling out the RMA form with all the information, they have you manually fill in a second form to put in the box :shadedshu ). What ever it was done and I would have a new one in 2 weeks according to their claims. Well it took 3 weeks, but I recived a mobo. I opened the box, and I found the mobo box, with what seemed to be a refurb sticker on it w/e not a deal breaker. Then I noticed it looked alot like the exat mobo I sent in, as the packages for the SATA cables were opened, with great dread I checked the serial number agaist what was in my records and sure enough it was my exact same mobo. I assumed they had fixed the issue, and went about installing it back into my case. To my dissmay, it was still dead. I opened up the help page and sent a very angry complaint in. And called the support number. And after 30 mins of being on hold, I finally got someone. The woman seemed rather indifferent to my situation and insisted that it worked when it left their service department. I then told her that I was sending it back in and that I trusted the problem would be solved.

Three weeks later I did get a box with a new mobo in it. Okay so I thought the problem was finally fixed, WRONG :banghead:! Now it sees all the drives, but now I seem to get random BSOD's one points to the memory, the other points to the proc. I know they are both fine as they both came from another system and it worked just fine, I also swapped parts and the problems persist. So I re-installed windows, and the BSOD's continue! Ughh now I am fed up, the support center people are indifferent and useless! I will be selling the mobo. I just purchased an ASUS mobo from Buy.com, ASUS M4A785-M. And I do hope it will be much better than the Gigabyte mobo I have. I will most definatly say that I will never be purchasing another Gigabyte product in my life time, nor will I ever say a nice word about them.

I also advise all of you to avoid them like the swine flu! I won't say I hate them, but I'm not far from it. If I had a choice of rectal cancer or a Gigabyte product I would take the cancer!

I loved my Gigabyte boards. Never really had a single problem with them and seemed to get a great O/C from them. 4.2 GHz from a P4 (cant remember the model #) on air! Stable too. I know customer support sux bad. But there is bad apples in the bunch often. The board may not of liked the RAM or the proc. I had a similar issue when I put a celery D in and would BSOD. I put in a P4 in a everything was fine. Everyone has their opinions about diff. products and they are entitled to them!

I'll pass, I've wasted enough time on dealing with the pain of owning a Gigabyte mobo. I'm glad you had good luck with them, I loved my nForce2 Gigabyte mobo for my Athlon 2800+ Barton. Which was why I bought this one. It proved ot be a large mistake!

I swapped the ram, and swapped the proc, as well as the OS hard drive, the only thing that was the same was the mobo. The mobo by process of elimination is the only thing left that can be the problem.

well dont think that any of the other brands RMAs are a whole lot better.

i've had to RMA to almost every company and each one has its own flaw.

asus will send you your same mobo back a few times before sending you one with a totally different problem alltogether. eventually they send you one thats working correctly.

MSI is a fucking pos company and i personally dont acknowledge their existence because EVERY SINGLE MSI product i have ever owned has been DOA.

most of the rest are decent for mobos.

i will say... pc power and cooling never replaces any product... they WILL repair yours and make DAMN sure that its 120% of new when they return it to you. i see this as a great thing though... saves them money and you get a really well built product that the company stands behind 120%

I never had a problem with Gigabyte, My main board is a Gigabyte MA790FX-UD5P. I have a Gigabyte Radeon 9550 in an old computer that was OCed from 250/200 to 400/275 and its still at those clocks and running without any problems.

Do you have a SATA card for the other HDDs? I mean 14 HDDs on a mATX board is alot. They only can fit 6 on the board.

EDIT: just saw ur sig.

I agree that MSI sucks, as my experience is the same as yours, I had to sell the broken board on a 1 time ebay account in order to get rid of it. But I have always had a good experience with ASUS.

As for yout comment about other companys RMA, I have never had anything close to this bad of an experience with any other company of any product in my life time! Shit Sony is easier to live with.

You seem rather butt hurt that I don't like Gigabyte.

Because you havent had any problems that means no one else ever has right ?

It was 72 dollars when I purchased it. Also why should the price have any relivence as to the quality of the mobo, are you saying their mobos are only good if you spend 100 dollars or more on them ?

Generally from what I've seen with my experience, boards under 90-100$ don't seem to be as reliable as boards that are over 100$ this is what I've gathered from years of experience.

Because you havent had any problems that means no one else ever has right ?

I never said that. I'm just using my experience as proof that Gigabyte is a good company.

Finally I will say it's rather sad that people have chosen to turn this into a trolling and flame session, for me haveing the position of not likeing Gigabyte. Rather than having a constructive conversationa about the problems I experienced with this company. I no longer like Gigabyte, and I will never purchase any of their products ever again! This is my opinion, just let it go, no need to become butt hurt over it.:ohwell: Now if you wan't to talk about possible trouble shooting, like compatability with the raid card or other things, I would be happy to try them I have 5 days till my ASUS mobo shows up, if I can fix this and make it work I would be more than happy to keep the Gigabyte mobo and save myself 90 dollas and gratefull to whomever provides the solution. Otherwise don't post here, I just don't care.

Have you tried it without the raid card?

Yes I have, and it gives me a BSOD blameing the memory, and when it restarts it randomly resets the resolution as well . I have thought about getting a vid card to see if it's maybe the on board vid card that is causing the problem, but it would defeate the purpose of having it, as I need the PCI E slot for the raid card.

gigabyte is the ONE company that tests every single product before it gets boxed and shipped.

NO other company does that.

thats why i like GB.

I know they are ancient tech. but see if a PCI card does the same thing if ya have an old one laying around. Whats the shared memory usage for the onboard video set to?
