Will a 9800 GT run without a power hookup?

I have a pc with a 350 Watt PSU but no power connector for a graphics card, if i install the gpu and downclock it a lot will it be able to run? or will it not even work without being hooked up to the psu?

Well, if you can get those Geforce 9800GT Green Edition, like this one, then you can do without the 6-pin pci-e power-cable, since there's simply no such connector for that pci-e power cable on those Green videocards.

Otherwise you will need that 6-pin pci-e power cable (you can solve it with a molex-to-pci-e power connector converter if you don't have one with your PSU), because without one you can't start up the PC, and you will get a really loud peep that comes from the alarm/speaker that's built on the card; it warns to you that the power cable is not connected to the videocard.

All you need is an adapter like in the attached picture. Most have 2 molex connectors for the one PCI-e 6 pin connector, however if you only have one to spare there are "Y" adapters that take one connector and make 2 out of it, which is what I used for my 9800 GTX+ (XLR8 card, requires 2x PCI-e 6 pin connectors) before I had a power supply with proper cables.

Depends on the card I guess. I'm guessing if it does boot at all, it won't work properly. Get one of those adapters everyone's been recommending.

It'll display a message saying the card requires external power. It won't get beyond POST without it.

I'm pretty sure you need at least a 400w PSU to handle an 9800 GT. I would not risk running that card on a 350w. It's new PSU time.

what?

greens have no power connector, regulars do.

no BIOS flash can change the requirements, its a hardware feature/requirement.

From what I remember the PCBs are the same, so I thought maybe the check for the 6pin is done by the bios, and thus flashing the green bios would remove the check...

they run at lower clocks and lower voltages. regular ones cant get enough power from the slot.

flashing to the green would also flash green clocks, and I remember greens that could overclock to the regular spec, but thats all beside the point. would it bypass the 6pin check or not?

Buying a $3 PCIe power dongle sounds easier than possibly bricking the card with a new BIOS.

Is the 350w PSU any decent e.g. not a gutless POS like a Coolmax, Logisys or other 1 pound piece of junk? I have a Dell 350w running a 5770 and a 6670 on a Gigabyte 790GX board and stock Phenom II 965 (but it has 2 18A 12v rails and it is loud, but perfectly fine).

clocks yes, but also ram timings and voltages the card may not run stable at.

no i dont think it would.
