Can you use the upgrade straight from XP? Otherwise I'm gonna have to pony up for the full version, I REFUSE to upgrade from XP to Vista and then Vista to 7 if I need to reinstall Windows.

Depending on the version of 7, I can't possibly say the right upgrade path.

I know the upgrade path to Vista is as the following:

XP Home to > Any Version of Vista via Upgrade option.
XP Pro to> Vista Home Basic, Home Premium required a Clean Install. Enterprise, Business, Ultimate you could upgrade.

If you get Windows 7 Home, or Pro, I am not sure the proper path from XP Home/Pro.. I'm assuming they have made it very easy to upgrade since they are "Delaying" the death of Windows XP until 2011 or so, and are basically handing Windows 7 out on a silver platter for everyone to enjoy.

Wish these were retail versions. I'll be pushing my university to get the volume licensing for Windows 7 ASAP.

Does anybody know if 32-bit keys will work in 64-bit versions like Vista?

I don't think that has been released as of yet (NM There is a wiki for it, Thanks Cray! :toast: ). I'd say once the RTM officially launches sometime in July that we can get more info.

Last I heard of the Windows 7 Version's they were the same as Vista. Home Basic, Premium, Ultimate, Enterprise, etc.

now it's Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate.

ALSO: For anyone that has bought ANY equipment from any major OEM provider and it had Windows Vista preinstalled regardless of the version, call Microsoft and they should give you a free version of Windows 7. This could be with any version of Vista purchased after a certain time. I had student's who recieved new laptop's that have called and recieved free Upgrade's to Windows 7 getting a free disc shipped out on October 22nd, or later depending on the actual release date of the product.

Technet/MSDN should be getting the RTM version uploaded around mid July from what I keep hearing.

We have been requesting it. The school I teach at is part of the Microsoft IT Academy program..and we want it available ASAP.

Sounds good to me. When I first became aware of the program (I was an undergrad, now going into my first year of graduate work) I was shocked at the value of the software setting on there. You can get server 2008's datacenter version, enterprise, you can get exchange server ... all sorts of stuff that I can do nothing with but is really expensive. And they only use one key and then change them overtime, so... I guess Bill just wants to get his stuff out there to indoctrinate the next generation in exchange for money.

Point is, there are all versions of windows from DOS 6 - 98 - 2000 - xp - vista available on there too. I am waiting to see Win7, and if what you say is true, getting it at RTM would be pretty amazing. One of my teachers last semester was the guy who handles all of that for my school (University of Illinois at Springfield).

Oh my school hands out academic copies (retail copies with resale deterrents) of 32-bit software for like $50. $50 Vista Ultimate, $50 Office 2007 Ultimate, etc.

The only thing I've downloaded from there that I've actually made use of is Visual Studio 2005. I made a utility program in C# to search for duplicate files. Best 3 hours ever ;)

That's good, since it's free to the student's. Nice thing to do, since the softwares freaking expensive.

We get sort of the same thing.

We can also generate our own CD keys. http://img.techpowerup.org/090625/Capture007-20090625.jpg

    Totally agree ^^
I can't afford that, that is a whole new Gfx card right there.
The pre order thing that they are doing tomorrow (For £50), is this for the upgrade or the official CD?
