A problem El_Mayo had when installing Windows 7 was that he needed his install disc present to boot windows 7. This is a problem that isn't local to him. I was surfing the mighty google and found a technet forum post about this particular issue.
So the problem is that your c: drive or wherever your os is doesn't contain the mbr. you need to run bootsect.exe.I installed Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition today and it will not start without the instiallation DVD in the drive
If the DVD is not in the drive i get error message
"Boot disk failure insert system disk and press enter"
My system consists of an
Asus an8 sli deluxe motherboard
AMD X2 4200+
2gb ram
GeForce 6800 GS
Highpoint RocketRaid 2680 with 2 raid array attached
1st (2x300Gb in raid 0) OS installation
2nd (3x1.5Tb in raid 5) Data
1 DVD RW connected to the 1st IDE channel on motherboard as master
1 CD RW connected to the 2nd IDE channel on motherboard as master
I have set the bois of the rocket raid to boot form the disk Windows 7 is installed to
I have set the bois of the motherboard to boot from hard disk. then in the hard disk option it shows the raid card as the first priority
When i installed windows I used the Raid drivers that i downloaded from the highpoint website for my raid card and for windows 7 64 bit. it then found both raid arrays as hard disks. I did it as a clean install and windows created 2 partitions on the OS hard disk one as the main drive and a seperate 100mbs as some kind system disk
Windows works perfectly if i leave the DVD in. I dont need to touch anything when it says press any key to boot from DVD, just wait about 5 seconds and then windows loads from the hard disk.
I hope that is all the information that all you guys and girls need to help me out.
If you need anything else please let me know
Many thanks in advance
James
NOTE: the following assumes you are trying to boot off your c: drive - if it is another letter you want to boot off of change it accordingly.
run cmd as admin (click start>all programs>accessories then right click Command Prompt >run as adminsistrator)
type <path>bootsect /nt60 C:\ <enter> don't worry about the locking message
(where< path> is the location of your bootsect.exe file - if i recall it is in the installation disk /boot dir)
take that install disk out of your dvd drive finally!
reboot
done.
