A very plausible rumor doing rounds has it that Microsoft may sell "family-pack" licenses for its Home Premium (and perhaps Home Basic) variants of the upcoming Windows 7 operating system. The license allows users to install and use a copy of the OS in three PCs in the same household, while being priced significantly less compared three individual copies or paper licenses. Last week, a blogger noticed an interesting term in the license agreement of a pre-release version of Windows 7 Home Premium which read:
Today, an American e-tailer started accepting pre-orders for Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade "Family-Pack" (manufacturer product code GFC-00236). It is priced at US $144.99, a mere $25 more compared to its single-user retail price of $119.99. If this sort of a pricing scheme stays on with the full-version retail pack too, it would sweeten the deal many fold. Three fold to be precise.

The link in the quote won't work. For obvious reasons.

Awesome idea! Big props to MS on this as many can benefit from it.

Great deal but for two more days you can still get the premium upgrade for $50. So after that ya it's quite a bit better.

For me its not a good deal unless I get Professional... Vista Home Premium is perhaps the best OS I have used from MS.

This is a good idea to influence people like me, I like it. I have 3 rigs running Vista and for simplicity, I'd rather keep them all on the same OS. Until now, this was looking like I'd have to purchase 3 upgrades to convert to Windows 7. The $ vs benefit just were never going to stack up until now.

Well, microsoft has to do SOMETHING to stay competitive

Seriously though, now that google has an OS on the way - and MACOS/Linux continue to creep away at MS's market share, not to mention the vista flop - MS is probably feeling the pressure to perform. Sure MS is huge and has lots of money, but an OS takes a lot of time and effort to build and support.

Apple has been doing this for years. Family Packs are a really good idea and make for a bargain if you have multiple PCs in the house.

I honestly don't think that the Google OS will be competing with Microsoft. Everyone said Android was going to be great and was going to be moved to basically a line of phones, look at it now.

+1. I dont think anyone will truly compete with microsoft (on the same level anyway) for a very long time.

If you order from amazon now they wont charge you credit card until they ship so I ordered a second copy of pro @ $99 each I don't know the exact date they stop selling it for half off but there is not much time left if I remember rite. I called amazon to see how long we would be able to get it at that half off price but she said she didn't know and they wont tell her.
